We've all seen the "BPA-Free!" labels on certain plastic products, especially plastic water bottles. Do you remember the year you became aware of the synthetic chemical bisphenol A (BPA)? I think I started to notice the "BPA-Free!" labels around 2007. Crazy, considering it's been in use since the 1960's. 👀
Naively, after seeing all these "BPA-free!" labels popping up everywhere, I assumed that since BPA appeared to be "bad," it was therefore being removed from most products...you know, to keep the public safe and all. 😬
BOY. WAS. I. WRONG! 😦
Nope, it's being removed from SOME products (and sometimes being switched out with BPS which may also be toxic) but it is still plentiful in many plastics, food storage containers, plastic water bottles, receipt paper, recycled paper, baby bottles, canned foods, dental sealants and more! 🍼
And how does BPA relate to fertility? Well, it's been shown to CAUSE oocyte (egg) aneuploidy (chromosomal issues) in animals for one. Secondly, in women undergoing IVF, BPA urine levels were inversely associated with # of eggs retrieved and peak estrogen levels. 🙈
So basically, HIGHER BPA = LOWER # of eggs and LOWER estrogen! (PMID 20002217) 🙉
And there's more - another study found that BPA was associated with recurrent miscarriages. (PMID 15947000) 🙊
Oh wait, there's more! Yet another study showed that there was an increased odds of implantation failure with higher BPA levels. (PMID 22484414). 😧
So what can you do? 🤗😎
👉Try your best to avoid plastics
👉Store food in glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers
👉Try to avoid buying foods packaged in plastic wrap (deli containers, etc)
👉Use reusable mesh produce bags instead of the plastic ones at the grocery store
👉Avoid canned foods - cook those beans at home!
👉Use stainless steel water bottles
👉Make nut butters, nut milks, yogurt, etc at home
👉NEVER MICROWAVE PLASTICS & keep plastics out of the heat in general
👉 Try to avoid touching receipts (and thermal paper in general).
