Thank you for your hard work

As an attempt to show my appreciation for all learned this weekend I’ll be running 40%off for Keys to Working with Rowers DM me for the link!

Rowing coaches jobs are massively complex. Being and feeling responsible for the happiness and well being of the many athletes they’re responsible for, trying to teach them the sport of Rowing and helping them have the opportunities they want within the world of rowing without killing the love of the sport is really challenging. To be surrounded by coaches who have such passion for the sport, such drive and desire to be the best coach they can be and the willingness of collaboration between coaches of even directly competitive programs is really amazing to see. It’s a refreshing opportunity to have been surrounded by Rowing for the weekend. It always reignites and reaffirms my why behind the population I’ve chosen to work with and the fact that my professional career revolves around rowing. It’s a space which creates so much potential and has given so many of us opportunities we wouldn’t have had without this sport. I was surrounded by so many wonderful coaches this weekend and learned so much from and with them. Looking forward to next year!

Finding your go to mix of how you warm up before rowing is a game changer. Some combination of spine movement, glute, core and shoulder use is super important. You’re about to ask these muscles and joints to work hard for you for your workout. So talk to them first. Give your brain and body a chance to say hi before you just start rowing.

There are many types of back pain for rowers. Just like anything in Rowing there is no this is always the case or you will always see this one thing. Rowers find lots of funky different ways to move their body and accomplish the Rowing stroke.

A trend amongst high school rowers for me at the moment, both male and female, is TL junction pain. It might be muscular. It might be bony. Helping them feel better and row faster is all about them understanding how to use the core properly and understanding how to then translate that to a better posture within their Stroke.

Let’s talk rowing injuries. Trying something new here. I want to start to share general week recaps, fun aspects of rowing rehab and other pieces to help people new to working with rowers get a jump start. Lucky to spend the majority of my week hanging with rowers so I’m excited to start to share some of the fun.

There are four points traditionally defined for a rowing stroke:

-Catch
-Drive
-Finish/Release
-Recovery

The aspects of each position I pay attention to from a performance and injury prevention stand point are:
- Pelvis position
- Back position
- Shoulder position
- Core connection

With these all going well it greatly decreases the chance of back, rib and shoulder injuries.

There’s always a few factors that can go into why the positioning might not be ideal. Range of motion, strength, control or level of competency of the rower.

Head of the Charles Recap/Photo Dump-

HOCR is a family weekend for us. My parents step up their grandparent roles while filling buckets of seeing high school friends racing for my dad. Pat and I have race committee roles we enjoy having mixed into the weekend.

This year didn’t go as planned for me as an athlete. I hurt my leg too close to race day to be able to race. But it happens. I’ve been the one to have to encourage people to realize it’s not their year before, just different to decide that for myself. I’ll just have to wait to give my new hip a spin down the race course until next year.

The weekend was full of pride and excitement for the many many clients and friends who raced (many multiple times)! Seeing happy faces around after a race, watching people launch and experiencing the joy in the awards tent as people win for a first time or defend their title.

It’s a weekend like no other.

Now on to in some ways the time of year I anticipate the most. The put things back together, take a pause and get ready for winter training, enjoy some quieter times out on the river before it’s too cold, pumpkin spice deliciousness, time of the year.

Rowing is a sport you can learn at any age and hopefully continue to do for decades. It’s a sport that is accessible to the majority of bodies, regardless of mobility changes from injury or adding years. Being someone who understands the sport of Rowing, understands the pride moments, a rower might have in terms of handling their equipment getting in and out of a boat or how they interact with the sport on the water are all important things to know so that you can be the person to make sure they are doing everything they can to enjoy being on the water and not being held back by the pieces of the sport that you need to manage on land. Rowers are stubborn, and sometimes the people who work with them on land in a physical therapy room and athletic training room or a weight room are the ones who need to give them the tools they need so rowing remains fun and they aren’t held back by getting in and out of the boat being difficult.

Big News!

Thank you to OneWorld Rowing. They have offered to sponsor 15 purchases of Keys to Working with Rowers making the entire course $100 off so instead of $129 you only pay $29!

The support to help get this information into the hands of athletic trainers, strength coaches, physio/PTs and other helpful humans involved in keeping rowers performing and enjoying their sport is huge.

The cross over goal of Powerhousephysio and OneWorld Rowing is that we create an environment where rowers are supported to achieve their goals. They have the resources to help them stay healthy while chasing their dreams. OneWorld Rowing is supporting Division III and ARCA programs for just this reason. Often these levels of collegiate rowing are lesser funded and are given S&C or AT well intended but that just don’t know the sport of Rowing.

Keys to Working with Rowers is the answer. Taking this course this fall while set up a team to be well supported this winter and spring when a rowing team really needs their strength programming to take into account the uniqueness of the sport, for athletic trainers to improve their biomechanics knowledge of rowing to better understand the injuries. Keys to Working with Rowers is build to help everyone involved in a rowing team be the best at their job that they can be. Let the rowers row and have fun training and racing knowing they are well supported in the weight room or training room if they ever need it.

How do you sign up with one of these 15 hugely discounted offers? DM me or Email me. Tell me who you are, who you work with and if you fit in OneWorlds Vision I’ll send you the link to sign up for this HUGE discount!!
