A controversial one for this fine Monday morning!

I’ve been in the wellness industry for a little bit now and as it keeps growing and getting bigger than ever, I sometimes sit here and go ā€œHUH?!ā€

There’s so much noise, not enough nuance and things that just downright confuse me!

1. I never want to talk badly about other dietitians but dang -if you don’t believe in the healing power of food, why did you choose this career and can we please chat about how amazing it is??

2. Gym bros - blink twice if you’re ok
hitting macros with only protein powders, protein bars, and processed foods with added protein isn’t as important as a Whole Foods diet.

3. The new food pyramid discussion reminded me sometimes we can over analyze things! To me the message was to eat more whole foods. It’s up to providers to help guide people to find their personal diets that support their bio-individuality.
Also why did no one ever mention that water has never been on one of the infographics?!

4. The supplement trend cycle really confuses me!
Us functional medicine providers have been using things like colostrum for years and all of a sudden it becomes really cool. Why? How? What’s next? I certainly don’t know!

Tell me what your thoughts are in the comments!

When I worked at a wellness store, a probiotic company called me up to ask why I had said no to carrying their probiotic.

The person at the company said:
ā€œRespectfully, I just have to ask that why as a dietitian you don’t want our probiotic that has the MOST strains and the MOST CFU’s of any probiotic on the marketā€

My answer:
ā€œIs there clinical evidence of why these strains were chosen and at these levels? More isn’t always better, especially for my patient’s with chronic gut issuesā€

His follow up answer was lacking and we never carried the probiotic.

When I recommend probiotics, I am very intentional about what probiotic, what strains and what CFU’s would work best for each person.

ā˜€ļøIf you aren’t sure where to start with a probiotic - see my previous post! ā˜€ļø

But the 2 times where I’ve recommended a high strain and high CFU probiotic are:

1ļøāƒ£ During and after probiotics
2ļøāƒ£ During an active yeast infections

In those situations go ahead and run to the store and get the highest probiotic you can find ASAP!

Don’t make the same mistakes I made!!

For most of my life I’ve had something off with my gut or been actively working on a gut health protocol. Even when my gut was it’s worst, it still took me a whole year to finally work on my gut. Think of all the time and money I’ve spent on healing my gut…

Now, on the other side of it, I take my daily probiotics and only need something bloating or BM’s as needed. I’m currently working on a mini protocol to make minor adjustments, but I 100% feel like I am on the other side of healing my gut!

Here’s what I’d do from the beginning to save myself a lot of money and time on my journey:

šŸ’œĀ Admit that my stress is having an impact on my gut
For so long, I was so stressed and I actively didn’t want to work on it. I was stuck in fight/flight mode felt too busy to slow down. I didn’t think I could keep up with my overloaded schedule without cortisol pumping through my body. I didn’t realize or want to look at how my schedule, mindset and was the problem, not trying to keep up with it.

šŸ’œĀ Work on drainage before starting any protocol
You have to unclog the drain before you flush out more toxins with a detox protocol. When I first started working on my gut, I felt WORSE. I had a new set of symptoms that I didn’t have before. In hindsight I see that I missed an important first step - supporting my bowel movements and detox pathways first before killing off SIBO and trying detox protocols.

šŸ’œĀ Wait so long to get help
I was in so much pain before I started to heal my gut. But the truth is the only reason I even started to work on my gut is because my mom pushed me to work with someone when I started getting daily migraines. It makes me sad to think about how much I dealt with before asking for help.

If you have a similar story, I GET IT! I’ve been there.

I want you to start your gut health journey now - without any of the mistakes I made!

Cali with the best family and friends ā˜€ļø

I came to SF for a childhood friend’s wedding and had to extend my trip to see my family, especially my niece!

Even though I was working, I got to enjoy the warmer weather, went to yoga daily, went on a hike, had lots of mocktails and got to spend time with some of my most favorite friends and family in LA & SF!

During these working trips I do a few things to try and stay grounded:
- go grocery shopping
- find a yoga studio ASAP
- stick to some type of routine (reading before bed, walks, consistent bed time…)

I feel best in my routines so these practices help keep me feeling bent best while still being able to enjoy the place I am visiting.

Where to next?!

This is my application to be your gut health/stool test influencer (with actual credentials and experience šŸ˜‰)

But in all seriousness, I wanted to do this ā€œunboxingā€ to show you the behind the scenes of the test I do with my clients and how it helped me!

I went from:
- Going to the bathroom ONCE per week
- Bloating so bad it woke me up
- Distention (I looked pregnant all the time)

…To a healthy gut! Daily movements and no bloating.

It’s hard to know what is going on in your gut without testing. This test let’s me find the root cause of gut issues AND make a custom protocol.

Vote if you think I should share my results or if thats TMI 😬
