Regulation. Participation. Rapport. Trust. Respect.
At Ready, Set, Bloom Therapy we’ve been focusing on building foundational skills in the most FUN and MESSY way possible!
This client mixed in so many different textures, consistencies and temperatures and made himself a life-sized sensory bin! To encourage his participation in therapy, we focused on his strengths and interests, set our realistic boundaries and then let him go to town! Not only is this play-based activity filled with the best sensory experiences but it provides:
Cognitive development; skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, developing their imaginations, and explore new ideas.
Language development; through play and exploration, learning new words and concepts, which can use to describe the experience. *I LOVE this opportunity to teach interoceptive awareness and descriptor words.
Social Skills; skills such as sharing, turn-taking and cooperation. Empathy by sharing this experience with others and listening to what others are also experiencing.
Sensory Integration; so much intense input happening with this type of play! Receiving varied input through sensory receptors and then processing the information helps to teach more mature self-regulation skills.
Emotional Regulation; Sensory play helps regulate emotions and reduce stress. This experience can be calming and therapeutic, helping to feel more relaxed and in control.
Per his mom, this little guy was way more regulated the rest of the day after 30 minutes of exploring his “sensory soup!”
What’s your favorite sensory bin combination?!
