Alcohol-exposed pregnancies are a preventable cause of birth defects. During Birth Defects Awareness and Prevention Month, NPWH highlights how WHNP-BCs lead prevention by turning evidence into action, guided by our clinical position statement, “Prevention of Alcohol-Exposed Pregnancies.”

Key takeaways for clinical practice include:

🔹 Universal alcohol screening for all adults age 18 and older, including pregnant patients

🔹 Use of validated screening tools with brief, motivation-enhancing interventions when excessive use is identified

🔹 Clear, fact-based counseling that there is no known safe amount of alcohol at any time during pregnancy

🔹 Nonjudgmental, respectful, and non-stigmatizing communication

🔹 Counseling s*xually active patients who drink alcohol on effective contraception or abstinence

🔹 Ongoing follow-up, support, and referral to specialty services when needed

🔹 Advocacy against policies that deter patients from seeking prenatal care

NPWH is calling on our community to take urgent action.

The U.S. Department of Education has excluded all nursing programs, including NP and WHNP programs, from its updated definition of “professional degree” programs. This change, set to take effect July 1, 2026, threatens access to federal student loans, puts advanced nursing education at risk, and could deepen workforce shortages at a time when patients need you most.

To make speaking up as simple as possible, NPWH created a downloadable letter template you can personalize and send directly to your Members of Congress. Your voice carries weight, and collective advocacy is essential to ensure nursing is fully recognized as a professional discipline in federal education policy.

Please take a moment today to contact your legislators and help protect access to advanced nursing education!

Thinking about how to improve pelvic-floor and urinary incontinence education in your care?

This new study “Women’s knowledge and practices regarding urinary incontinence”, published in the BMC Public Health journal, reveals big gaps in understanding and habits among participants!

🔹 About 63% of women had poor knowledge of urinary incontinence.

🔹 Around 62% had poor understanding of pelvic-floor exercises.

🔹 Over 70% reported unsatisfactory daily practices related to urinary incontinence care.

🔹 Better knowledge was strongly linked with better self-care practices, underscoring how education can directly impact outcomes.

This underscores how essential clear, culturally sensitive pelvic-floor education and guidance are, especially when many women may not fully understand pelvic-floor health or how to care for it properly.

What happens in childhood doesn’t stay in childhood, and it shows up in reproductive and maternal health every day.

The Clinical Journal for Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (CJNPWH) article "Screening and Intervention for Adverse Childhood Experiences in Women of Reproductive Age" explores how screening for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in women of reproductive age can change care trajectories. By integrating ACE screening into clinical workflows and pairing it with patient education and referrals, this quality improvement project highlights a practical approach to improving long-term health outcomes and helping interrupt the intergenerational impact of trauma.

If you’re looking for evidence-informed ways to strengthen whole-person care, support family planning conversations, and promote prevention for future generations, this is a must-read!
