Letās kick the week off with a little bit of science, so we can better understand how mental wellness can affect our physical health.
Our body produces a hormone called cortisol, often described as the āstress hormoneā. But, cortisol isnāt all bad.
At normal levels, cortisol helps control your metabolism, helps suppress inflammation, helps regulate blood pressure and blood sugar, and helps with your sleep-wake cycles. Basically, it helps your body maintain homeostasisāthe happy medium your body likes to live at.
The problem with cortisol comes when our bodies are in a constant state of stressāwhich, letās be realāa lot of us are on a daily basis. Then our bodies are releasing more and more cortisol, which leads to poor sleep, weight gain, high blood pressure, high heart rate, high blood sugar, feelings of anxiety and overwhelm.
Over time, those things turn into high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, anxiety and depression, heart attacks, strokes.
Scary, right?
The good news is is that managing your stress levels will reduce your cortisol levels. And, reducing your cortisol levels back to normal can help minimize (and even reverse) any damage done by high cortisol levels in the past.
So, the better we can manage our stress levels, the healthier we will be, both physically and mentally
