Wisdom. Heed it.

It takes boldness, even audacity, to step out of our habitual patterns.

We will consider the following quote from the book, The Mysticism of Sound and Music.

“Sound is the perceptible activity of the all pervading life. Different sounds differ in their outer expression, but within it is one and the same activity that directs all sounds. It is in expression that sounds differ, because of the different instruments through which they are expressed. The deeper we pe*****te into the mystery of sound, the more we are able to trace the link that connects all sounds. This link is what the musician calls harmony, and it is in harmony that is hidden the secret of joy and peace.”

In this season of resolutions and proclamations and the like, the goal of tonight’s class is all about alignment. Through sound, attempting to align with the harmony that already exists in sacred silence. And seeing what emerges from that silence as actionable intelligence from the soul. I like to think of it as resolutions re-imagined.....

Blessing on this beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. Whether you celebrate New Year or not. Whether you set intentions/resolutions/declarations or not. My wish for you is peace, harmony and joy above all else - aligning with the desires of your soul rather than ego.

May the calendar year ahead be rooted in peace and harmony to endure the joys and sorrows that emerge with equanimity and discernment.

As I’ve shared before, I play with gongs and sound bowls daily - it is part of my meditation and nervous system reset practice.

Today I took that practice to the edge of the sea. On a driftwood palm tree…. All was relatively calm until it wasn’t, then we just played wind gongs with the wind. And the audio obliged…..

Enjoy the blend of sound and nature, sun and sea breezes, water and sound waves….

A few thoughts on Winter Solstice and the season of winter -

Ms. Lauryn Hill reminds us in the hymn Everything is Everything, “After Winter Must Come Spring”. But Spring cannot come if we don’t heed the wisdom of winter - slowing down, turning inward, rooting into a nourishing foundation, releasing old growth to compost and make way for renaissance.

May this message be a blessing to you.

Peace healing and well being to all this holiday season.

What an honor to be among 8 yoga teachers that made a difference in 2025, with fellow friends focused on service and transformation. Congratulations to Kim Richardson, Anjali Kamath Rao, Arundhati Baitmangalkar, Allihopa Accessible and Adaptive Yoga along with the others recognized.

In 2025 I dared mightily to serve my communities - BIPOC, stroke survivor, activist, human - through practices that brought peace, insight, curiosity and benevolent disruption. Rooted in consistent practice and service I have born witness to a miraculous stroke recovery and am devoted to sharing this miracle with others.
Through I launched and maintained the I Am Not Okay and Sonic Tonic Meditation Series.

In partnership with Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health we continued our great work serving men of color through the Permission and Refuge, expanded our impact through the Amplify series on How We Heal and virtual Sonic Tonic series.

With Ompractice I had the honor of serving veteran caregivers by showing them simple practices to find peace of mind.

I partnered with Shanna Small Yoga to offer a new Trauma Informed training at Sedona Yoga Festival that gave tools to hold classes AND tend to your own healing, because ignorance of one’s blind spots as a teacher only causes more harm.

I gave a keynote address at the International Association of Yoga Therapists SYTAR conference on the power of embodied practice through my experience with stroke and recovery.

I have worked with many studios and communities (Omega Institute, Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Yoga Alliance) to offer sound practice, Prince practice and other ways to experience peace and unapologetic joy in these times of …. You choose the word.

A special thank you to Yoga Journal and Conscious Living PR for helping me experience the unexpected blessing of having your work appreciated in the world and amplified.

May all beings be healthy, protected and free from suffering. And may my actions greatly contribute to this, especially now.

In the season of stroke and recovery that has been my reality for the past 20 months, one of the things I’ve had to learn quickly is how to cultivate fearlessness.

Note that I said fearlessness, not foolishness. Fear has its place as a means of checking in and assessing threats to safety and security. To mindlessly charge into anything is not an act of bravery nor skill. But to acknowledge that you are afraid, and root into courage and still act - that is how fear can fuel healing and liberation.

I was afraid when I was discharged from the hospital, barely able to stand and unable to walk without orthotics and other supports.

I was afraid to take public transportation for fear that I would not be able to manage rush hour with my slow, purposeful gait.

I was afraid when I took my first steps without a walker, cane or other support (it was a rainy day and all I could think about was - you can’t slip and fall).

So I am now well practiced at confronting fear with love and moving forward with the intention of healing, liberation and transformation.

Last week at Franklin Street Yoga, after a morning asana class I felt called to try a headstand. I have not been upside down since the stroke for all the reasons. But I didn’t ignore the fear that also showed up along with the call to try headstand again. I caught my breath, connected to courage, set a good foundation and …. boom.

Rooted in heart wisdom, courage and a mindful consideration of fear as a basis for caution but not inaction.

Be blessed and inspired.
