How to overcome a mealtime tantrum:
1. Start by making sure there is at least 1 preferred food on the table
2. Ask your child if there is a different utensil or plate that might help them to eat
3. Offer a condiment or dip to help them engage with the food
4. Let them feed you!
5. If they are upset bring them to your lap until they are calm and able to return to their chair
6. Don't force them to eat!

Let’s talk about soup: Toddlers often struggle with mixed dishes such as soups and casseroles. Last night I served Tuscan bean soup for dinner and knew this would be a challenging meal for my son. I intentionally served it with bread but instead of keeping it separate I plated the bread dipped into the soup to help him interact with it. This trick doesn’t always work but last night it really did!

About Capital Pediatric Nutrition

Brittany has extensive experience working in the field of pediatric nutrition. She received her B.S. in dietetics, with a minor in Spanish, from the University of Maryland. Brittany then went on to complete her dietetic internship from the National Institutes of Health, focusing on providing medical nutrition therapy to the pediatric population. She has served as a pediatric dietitian at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC for many years. Brittany is available to see pediatric patients in the DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia area!
