A 2021 National Pediatric Readiness Project survey found that fewer than half of U.S. hospitals include children’s needs in their disaster plans. That gap is exactly what drives PPN Co-PI Charles Macias, MD, MPH, to help build stronger systems that support hospitals in pediatric readiness.

Dr. Macias recently authored an article originally published in University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital's publication “Innovations in Pediatrics” highlighting the critical work of PPN and its partners, including Pediatric Disaster Centers of Excellence and the EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center.

Flu season is here and this year it’s hitting kids especially hard. Influenza isn’t just a bad cold. Danielle Zerr, MD discusses how it can lead to serious illness, hospitalization, and complications in children, even those who were previously healthy. As of February 2, 2026, there have been 52 pediatric deaths due to influenza this year.

The flu vaccine remains one of the best tools we have to protect kids and reduce severe outcomes. Talk to your child’s healthcare provider about flu vaccination - it’s not too late!
