I’m thrilled to share the news of a new Elements-like outdoor enrichment company launching here in DC called Grown Outdoors. I’ve had the pleasure of working this autumn with the Grown Outdoors founder as she pursues her dream of offering fun, thoughtful experiences for Elementary aged kiddos. She launches her WINTER 1 season next week with daily sessions at Glover Archbald Park. Registration is open now! So if you are eager to have your kids out in the elements- checkout Grown Outdoors, register your child and rally their pals! I can assure you they will have a blast! ❄️⭐️💨☃️🦆🦊🦌

We wrapped up@our Winter Season with the racing of the 17th annual Elements Idita’run, based on the epic and historic, Alaskan . I’m so proud of the strength and confidence of these Elements Mushers. They know the woods and have felt the profound, simple effects of spending active time in them! Mush on! #

Today is my dad’s 93rd birthday! He (and my beloved mum) have always been my inspiration. From my earliest days, he would make sure we kids were outside and active. Whether we were riding horses, raking leaves, stacking wood and laying fires or frying eggs on a camp stove on the rocks of the James River… it was always fun or funny! Happy birthday Pop Pop!

Week One of our Elements Winter KIDS Season was all about venturing far and wide in search of hidden Treasures of the Trail. The kiddos followed a list of directions, learning different navigation methods…stick arrows, NSEW, rock cairns, trail blazes and trail-terms: ascent, descent, ridge, saddle, tributary…. They followed the directions and found the treasures (golden rocks, popsicle sticks and wine corks) but what they really discovered and realized is that the trails are the treasures.

As we conclude a bustling year filled with Element's programming, we find ourselves on the eve of the winter season. Just like weary bears, I too plan to hunker down and head into the woods for a winter's rest. I'll be with my family and plan to spend lots of time outside & fireside. I hope you too will gift yourself with time; time to slow down, reflect and savor the beauty that abounds. Here's to you, your health and a jolly holiday season. Happy Winter Solstice!

The woods were the perfect place for this awesome group of colleagues to walk, commune and create today. The fresh air and walking the trail shoulder to shoulder are even more powerful since they all came from across the country to gather for their company retreat. Being in the elements unites.🤝

Markel was back with us in the woods on Wednesday. But instead of being our Elements Woodland Access Intern (‘19, ‘20, ‘21, ‘22) he returned as a newly minted DC firefighter! He told the Wednesday Kiddos all about his training and time on the job and demo’ed how, in 32 seconds he can go from ‘alarm to fully outfitted’ and ready to squelch fires and save lives. I am BEYOND proud of Markel! 🔥🔥🔥

I loved happening upon this scene at our Tuesday Elements session this week. These two kiddos who didn’t know each other prior to Elements, came up with this awesome activity- to roll the branch across the log while also shimmying across themselves. They figured it out, we’re deeply invested and got to know each other better. Best of all is that it was a 100% kid generated activity. We were just there to watch over.

Round #2 (of 42) my DC Museum Mission was a sublime visit to the Renwick which is under the Smithsonian ☂️. The permanent collection is provocative as is the absolutely incredible current invitational show: sharing Honors and Burdens. Started my mission with lunch at my fave, and then popped in to see Nic . He curates fabulous clothes from unique designers as well as his own shoe line (laiik). I happened to park next to the beautiful St. John’s which is where my parents got married, Oct of 1957. Overall an awesome DC outing and was so energized with the creativity at the Renwick, that pumpkin carving went to a whole new level.
