The Jessica Tyler's Healthy Living page is dedicated to helping others achieve their health and fitness goals. As an avid health nut I found myself letting life, motherhood and good food get the best of me. I decided one day I needed to correct my bad habits and get my life back where I can enjoy everyday! I'm not a gym rat, so I took up walking, riding, yoga (even hot yoga) and any other low impact exercise course I could find. What I found is that introducing technology into my health goals helped me stay focused. I'm not a tech head, but using a Fitbit and supplements really helped boost my activity. I encourage you to share the journey with me and I will make sure help you reach your goals as I "Pay It Forward".

Everyone always asks me how to make a smoothie... so here's one thing I think you need to know.

How to make smoothies

Wash the vegetables & fruits.

Pre-cut the vegetables.

Put food with the highest water content (i.e. apples) first.

Make sure you add enough (purified) water for blending. This usually means that most food is covered with water. If you don't use enough water, the produce, nuts or seeds don't blend well.

Blend long enough so your foods will be really smooth, but not so long that they get warm. (Unless you'd like to make a warm soup of course).

You could warm up soups or drinks by blending for a few minutes.

Benefits of Blending

Once you know how to make smoothies you'll be rewarded with the following benefits:

Better absorption. Green leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach are hard to digest when raw. Today, people don't have jaws that can break the cell walls of these foods into a creamy substance.

If you use a high speed blender such as a Vitamix or Blendec blender, the blending will break the cell walls of the produce. Even the cells of tomatoes and carrots break. Thus, you'll absorb the lycopen and beta-caroten easily. This way you make it easy for your body to absorb all the wonderful nutrients of the vegetables and fruits.

A smoothie uses the whole food, no waste.

Unlike juicing, with a smoothie you keep all the fibers of the food.

Smoothies are a great way to eat your vegetables. Greens are the most alkalizing, mineralizing and healthiest foods. But not always the most palatable. By blending them, you can combine them with fruits or herbs for delicious tastes.

Blending is the quickest and easiest way to prepare (large amounts of) raw food. Virtually no preparation time. You can make the most delicious smoothies in just minutes.

No pans to scrub. Blenders are very quick and easy to clean.

Smoothie recipes are easy to find and to follow.

Because blending retains the fibers, smoothies stay well (in the fridge) for up to 24 hours. So you could make them the night before, or bring them along when you travel.

I actually left a smoothie in an air tight bottle in the car and forgot about it for a whole week. It was hot outside, so temperature in the car must have run up to 110 degrees F (40 C). When I found the smoothie a week later it still looked fine, no mold, no smell, not even oxidized. I didn't drink it (just in case), but I was surprised to see how long it stayed well.

Considerations

High speed blenders are the best if you want to learn how to make smoothies. They make the best quality and smoothest smoothies. They actually break the cell wall and thus increase the absorption of nutrients such as beta carotene. However, they are somewhat of an investment. The Blendtec and Vitamix cost 300-600 USD depending on the country where you live. Absolute worth it though. You'll use them daily.

Blenders might make quite some noise when you operate them. Not something you want to do when the kids are asleep.

Best Raw Food Blender

If you'd like to learn how to make smoothies, you need to know what blender to use. What is the best blender for making smoothies? High speed blenders that can break through the cell wand of green vegetables. Because then, you will get much more out of your smoothie and can easily absorb vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients.

Therefore, Vitamix and Blendec blenders are an absolute must when you're serious about raw food. They're also the most popular amongst raw foodist. They are the only blenders that break the sell wand and are powerful enough to handle tough fibers - like those of ginger - well.

The best selling Vitamix an Blendtec blender are relatively expensive raw food tools. However, if you compare to a stove, think about how often you'll use it, and the enormous health benefits, it's actually a bargain!

There are many different flavors of Creme Brulee. Chocolate is my favorite!

Perfect Crème Brulee Recipe:

Ingredients:

6 egg yolks, chilled
6 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups whipping cream, chilled
4 tablespoons granulated sugar, for topping

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. Adjust oven rack to center position. Butter six (1/2 cup) custard cups or ramekins and set them into a glass baking dish. Tip: Place a non-stick baking mat (called a silpat) on the bottom of your baking dish to both insulate and keep the ramekins firmly in place.

In a large bowl, beat egg yolks until slightly thickened. Add sugar and mix until dissolved; mix in cream, then pour mixture into prepared ramekins or custard cups. Bring the water for the water bath to a light simmer on top of the stove; carefully pour hot water into the baking pan to come half-way up the sides of the custard cups. NOTE: The most common mistake people make in baking a custard is not putting enough water in the hot-water bath. The water should come up to the level of the custard inside the cups. You must protect your custard from the heat.

Definition of Water Bath or Bain-Marie (bahn mah-REE) - A hot water bath or bain-marie are used to cook custards and baked eggs in the oven without curdling or cracking, and also used to hold sauces and to clarify butter. Water baths are most often used for egg-based dishes. The proteins in the eggs are very heat sensitive and only need to be warmed to cook thoroughly. They will start to get firm at only 145 degrees. Cooking them with a slow, gentle heat keeps the eggs soft and smooth.

Bake approximately 30 to 40 minutes (25 to 30 minutes for shallow fluted dishes) or until set around the edges but still loose in the center. The cooking time will depend largely on the size of the ramekin or custard cup you are using, but begin checking at a half hour and check back regularly. When the center of the custard is just set, it will jiggle a little when shaken, that's when you can remove it from the oven. If using a digital instant-read thermometer, inserted in the centers, the internal temperature should register approximately 170 to 175 degrees F. Begin checking temperature about 5 minutes before recommended time.

This is the type of cooking and meat thermometer that I prefer and use in my cooking. I get many readers asking what cooking/meat thermometer that I prefer and use in my cooking and baking. I, personally, use the Thermapen Thermometer shown in the photo on the right. To learn more about this excellent thermometer and to also purchase one (if you desire), just click on the underlined: Thermapen Thermometer.

Remove from oven and leave in the water bath until cooled to room temperature. Remove cups from water bath, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 4 hours or up to 4 days.

torching creme bruleesWhen ready to serve, uncover ramekins or custard cups. If condensation has collected on the custards, place paper towel on surface to soak up moisture. Sprinkle approximately 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar over each crème brulee (tilt and tap ramekins for even coverage). For best results, use a small hand held propane torch. Hold the torch 4 to 5 inches from the sugar, maintaining a slow and even motion. Stop torching just before the desired degree of doneness is reached, as the sugar will continue to cook for a few seconds after flame has been removed.

If you don't have a torch, place crème brulees 6 inches below the broiler for 4 to 6 minutes or until sugar bubbles and turns golden brown.

Refrigerate crème brulees at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve within 1 hour (30 to 45 minutes), as topping will deteriorate.

Makes 6 servings (depending on size of custard cups).
