🌿 Prenatal Visits: Preparing for a Confident Feeding Journey

🌟 Your prenatal visit with us is more than just a breastfeeding info class before baby arrives — it’s your chance to feel calm, capable, and ready for your feeding journey. 💗

During your session, we’ll cover the real-life essentials that make those first days smoother:
🤱 Latching: How to achieve a deep, comfortable latch and recognize what’s normal in the early days.
🛡️ Ni**le shields: When they can be helpful, how to size them correctly, and when to transition away.
🍼 Pacifiers & bottles: How and when to introduce them while supporting your feeding goals.
🥛Pump & fl**ge fitting: Finding your best fl**ge size, when to start pumping, and how to protect supply if the first days are tougherthan expected.
👋🏼Hand expression: Techniques and timing for comfort, milk collection, and maintaining production.

🌟 We’ll walk through each topic at your pace, creating a personalized plan that supports your goals — whether that’s exclusive breastfeeding, combo feeding, or pumping.

🌟Preparing ahead of time gives you the tools and confidence to navigate feeding with less stress and more support once baby is here.

Keeping your “liquid gold” safe is just as important as making it! Here’s how to store your pumped breast milk properly. 💛

✨ Milk Storage Tips:
🧊 Refrigerate: Store milk in the back of the fridge for up to 4 days.
❄️ Freeze: Freeze within 3-4 days if not used- good for about 6 months.
🏷️ Label Each Bag: Include date and time pumped.
🔁 First In, First Out: Use the oldest milk first.
🚫 No Refreezing: Once thawed, use within 24 hours and never refreeze.
💧 Warm Gently: Place the bag in warm water- never microwaving.

Every drop counts! With safe storage, your hard work keeps giving! 💪🍼

💪👶 Sometimes feeding challenges aren’t just about the mouth- they can be impacted by the body!

This little one was having a hard time using their left side, which was making it tricky to coordinate feeding. So, our physical therapist and feeding specialist teamed up for a co-treat session! 🤝

By addressing postural control, muscle balance, and motor coordination alongside oral motor skills, we help babies feed more comfortably, efficiently, and safely.

✨ When PT and feeding therapy work together, progress happens faster and with fewer frustrations for baby and parents.

If your baby struggles to feed on one side, prefers certain positions, or tires easily during feeding… a co-treat might be exactly what they need. 💗

Comment SPOONS below and I’ll send you our favorite spoon guide! 🍽️💛

Did you know there are spoon “stages” and the type you choose actually matter?! As your baby’s oral motor skills grow, utensils should progress too. Matching the spoon type to developmental stage makes self-feeding easier and more successful.

🍓 5–7 months: start with flat spoons with short handles. These promote easier lip closure, sensory awareness, and help baby learn how to move food off the spoon.

🍑 7–9 months: transition to a shallow bowl spoon. Baby is now building tongue control and coordination for thicker textures.

🥣 9–12+ months: move toward chunky-handled spoons that support grasp development and true independent self-feeding.

Self-feeding skills emerge gradually, supporting oral motor development, sensory learning, and confidence along the way.

✨ SAVE this for reference as your baby grows.

🧠✨ What’s going on when your baby loves crashing into piles of pillows?

That’s proprioception! Your baby’s way of learning where their body is in space! This “crash and play” helps develop balance, coordination, and body awareness.

💡 How to spot a proprioceptive seeker:
– Loves roughhousing, crashing, or pushing heavy toys 🧸
– Enjoys deep hugs or tight spaces
– Always on the move (or sometimes needs big movement to feel calm!)

✅ Ways to meet those proprioceptive needs:
• 💆‍♀️ Gentle massage or joint compressions
• 🧺 Pushing laundry baskets or weighted balls
• 🧱 Crawling over couch cushions or tunnels
• 🎶 Dancing, bouncing, or swinging

When we give babies the right sensory input, they learn to feel grounded in their growing bodies and feeding, motor skills, and focus all improve!

📚✨ Did you know that babies who are read to daily starting as early as 2 weeks old show stronger language skills by just 9 months? 🤯
It’s never too early to start building brains and bonds through books! ❤️

Here are a few of our favorite SLP-approved tips to make reading time engaging and fun:

👶 1️⃣ Repeat it! Reading the same book several times builds memory, word recognition, and anticipation.
👋 2️⃣ Get hands-on. Let baby turn pages, lift flaps, and point to pictures. Board books, “Dear Zoo,” “That’s Not My…” series, and touch-and-feel favorites are perfect for little hands.
🗣️ 3️⃣ Go beyond the words. Talk about what you see, describe colors, shapes, and actions—it all counts!
🎶 4️⃣ Use “parentese.” Slow down, use sing-song tones, and exaggerate your voice- it’s music to your baby’s ears!

💡 Remember: reading isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. One book a day keeps language delays away! 😉

Still battling the same clogged duct?
🌟It might be time to level up your care with therapeutic breast ultrasound and K Tape.

🎯 What is it?
It’s a specialized treatment of high frequency sound waves often used by physical or occupational therapists to increase circulation & reduce inflammation.

💥 Why it helps:
✅Increases local blood flow, enhancing lymphatic drainage

✅Can drastically reduce pain and engorgement

✅Often effective in just 1–3 sessions

✅Safe during lactation

👩‍⚕️ Especially helpful for:
— Recurring clogged ducts
— Engorgement that doesn’t improve with nursing/pumping
— Painful lumps with no fever (yet)
— Clogs that haven’t budged in 24+ hrs

⏰ Don’t wait until it becomes mastitis.

🌿 Helping Babies Feed and Move with Greater Ease 🌿

🌟Did you know that gentle, hands-on therapies like Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and Visceral Manipulation can support babies who struggle with feeding, digestion, or movement?

🔥These techniques work by releasing tension in the body’s soft tissues and supporting natural balance throughout the nervous system and organs. For infants, that can mean:
🍼 Improved latch and feeding (at breast or bottle)
💨 Easier digestion and reduced discomfort
💤 Better relaxation and sleep
💪 Smoother movement and motor development

👋🏼Our pediatric therapy team now includes Christina Boone-Shivers, PTA, CBS, who is trained in CST and Visceral Manipulation to help little ones feel more comfortable and connected as they grow.

🌟If your baby has trouble feeding, gas trouble, or just seems tense or uncomfortable, this gentle approach might help.
