✨The Black & Missing Foundation’s “Hope Without Boundaries” 5K was a success. Our Fit2Balance team showed up and showed out! During mental health awareness month it’s hard to imagine the emotional, financial, and psychological toll having a missing loved one has on a family. In a societal time filled with mass shootings, community violence, etc, it’s hard not to be desensitized. Many of us are just trying to function and navigate through our own personal stressors. We have to be mindful that we can thrive better in community; leaning into each other, and showing up. Thank you all for showing up in whatever capacity you could - in-person, donations, and sponsorship!! I’m grateful to all of you!! ✌🏿✨

Think about this for a minute.

I’ve had to be directly involved or consult on three suicidal ideation situations this week - rooted in depression, anxiety, PTSD, and straight up feeling unwanted and unneeded in their respective households.

The stigma around mental health and how we treat it is real. Many of us make efforts to dismantle systems. It exhaust us. We can certainly go beyond traditional approaches to treating mental health. I’m advocating that we create parallel systems and begin this work by transitioning from using mental illness to using brain health, like Daniel Amen, MD suggest.

My city, my city. I love you.

In my work I always say systems impact systems. We know nutrition directly impacts mental health and physical health outcomes.

Our babies need support, but our seniors do too. 11.1% of D.C.s 120,000 seniors are currently food insecure, in addition to dealing with housing costs and medical care.

Eating, and eating well is a human right. How we eat and under what conditions matters.

Access is a thing, no doubt. I can hit the carry out, the corner store, and the liquor store in a short commute, and still be food insecure. Systemic layouts, like this, are rarely a mistake.

Take control of what you can control.

Your body can’t digest if it’s not at rest. Self-awarenes and mindful eating are major first steps. Even if we think we’re eating regularly or healthy, if we’re covered in stress we aren’t digesting well. So, ask yourself, where’s it going?
