✨ How Bartending Made Me a Better Photographer ✨

When I was first starting out, I wasn’t ready to take the full leap into photography. Honestly, I was scared I wouldn’t make rent, so I picked up shifts bartending at a little spot in Cleveland Park, DC. At the time it felt like “just a job,” but years later I can see how much it shaped me as a portrait photographer.

🍸 Everyone has a story. At the bar, regulars came as much to talk as to drink. Listening closely, asking questions, and being genuinely curious built trust. That same skill helps people open up in front of my camera.

🍸 Tune out the noise. Friday nights behind the bar were mayhem—orders flying, music blasting, tabs piling up. I learned to stay calm, focused, and steady in the chaos… just like on a busy photo set.

🍸 Fake it ’til you make it. I didn’t know half the cocktails people asked for, but I smiled, improvised, and figured it out. Photography is the same—clients ask for something new, and I say “Yes” and learn quickly.

I never thought mixing drinks would prepare me for making portraits, but both jobs are about connection, confidence, and improvisation (and yes, both can get a little messy).
