GW Student National Medical Association

GW Student National Medical Association Membership includes more than 7,000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians. GW SNMA is active in a number of areas.

George Washington University SNMA is committed to supporting current/future underrepresented minority medical students, and addressing the needs of underserved communities. The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the nation's oldest and largest student organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. Established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University and Meharry Medical Schools, the SNMA boasts over 40 years of service to underserved communities and medical students. The “GDub SNMA Family” works to make the transition to medical school easier for its members with programs such as Big Sib-Little Sib, Pearl Panels & Mock PBE Practicals. We also engage in a number of community service activities such as our annual Holiday Ornament Fundraiser for The Children’s National Medical Center, Food & Friends Food Bank, Winter Coat Drive and Black History Month programming. SNMA is committed to reducing morbidity and mortality in under-served communities. Its programs are focus on educating and empowering local communities to make healthy lifestyle choices. The GW SNMA also sponsors local Pipeline programs that directly serve minority students at several levels of education: the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students (MAPS) and the Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP). SNMA organizes initiatives that educate members about healthcare issues abroad and provides them with opportunities to engage in health care experiences in other nations. Finally, SNMA advocates for its members and its communities as it addresses legislative and policy issues that affect medical education, health care delivery, and the health status of underserved communities.
