On April 17th, the members of our Board presented a special commemoration event at our park. This celebration was to dedicate and honor the park in the name of our Executive Director, Laura Collins, for her years of unwavering devotion to our agency and overseeing its upkeep of excellence in service provided to those we serve. The installation of our park has been a long sought-after endeavor, being meticulously planned step-by-step for nearly a decade before the first phase came to fruition.

The park was conceived with our individuals at the forefront of its purpose. By promoting health conscientiousness, peaceful meditation, and a plethora of other advantageous ideals, it is an ambitious contribution in support and encouragement for the well-being of our individuals, their families, and our staff.

Thank you to everyone who made this event flourish and reflect the tremendous accomplishment this park has become, and we sincerely thank Laura Collins for being an invaluable advocate and ally in our community, for our individuals, and for our mission. 'Laura's Park' is a milestone to be enjoyed for years to come, and we couldn't have done it without the commitment of our Board, staff, and the generosity of our community!

We had a truly exciting exploration through time at our Through the Decades showcase this last Friday! All of our individuals dressed to impress, featuring the finest fads from the 1920's to the present. Starting with the Charleston and ending with Alicia Keys, we believe this journey was a blast and look forward to our future display of talent!

Congratulations to Sifornia "Angel" Williams on being chosen for FCDSNB's Employee of the Year 2026! Angel is a House Manager for one of our agency's Community Training Homes where she oversees and executes the daily operational success in serving our individuals to the highest caliber. Through her inspiring efforts and passion for those we serve through innovative ideas and hands-on collaboration with other members of staff, Angel has proven her dedication to her profession with poise, ambition, and a true love for what she does. Thank you, Angel, for everything you do, and for the unwavering dedication you have for those we serve!

It's almost that time of year again--our agency's largest fundraiser of the year is set to tee-off on May 18th! Our 14th Annual Golf Tournament is only two months away and we're still accepting sponsorships and player registrations!

Mark your calendars! We’ve got a special showcase coming up featuring our individuals that can’t wait to show you their best representation of the most popular styles throughout the last century! We’ll be presenting this fabulous showcase next Friday, March 27th, to walk viewers through a myriad of trends and pop icons with our theme of ‘Through the Decades’. Starting at 6PM, curtains will draw at the Fairfield County High School Auditorium for one of our most anticipated events of the year!

Every year, the month of March is dedicated to bringing awareness to those with disabilities in encouragement for our communities to come together in the ongoing effort in advocating for the rights and independence of those with disabilities. Today, we were proud to be represented by our agency's own individuals and members of staff at the South Carolina State House in observation of Disability Advocacy Day as designated by Senate Resolution S. 926. We couldn't be prouder of them and we will continue our unwavering support and advocacy for those with disabilities and special needs!

A senate RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE March 4, 2026, AS "disability advocacy DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, this year marks the thirty-seventh annual Disability Advocacy Day. This event is a vital opportunity for individuals with disabilities, their families, and supporters to engage directly with lawmakers and share their stories; and

Whereas, one in three South Carolinians has a disability. These individuals, like all others, deserve the right to live, work, and fully participate in their communities throughout their lifetimes; and

Whereas, people with disabilities have the right to equal opportunities to live full, productive lives as valued citizens. They have the right to receive the support they need to exercise self-determination, to achieve independence, and to become productive members in the workplace; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Partnership of Disability Organizations helps bring the concerns of people with disabilities to the forefront of public awareness; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Partnership of Disability Organizations has become a credible source of information for policymakers, advocates, self-advocates, and the public about the issues that are important to individuals with disabilities; and

Whereas, the purpose of Disability Advocacy Day is to increase awareness and understanding among legislators, administrators, policymakers, and the public about the issues that are important to individuals with disabilities. Disability Advocacy Day provides a platform to highlight the challenges faced by South Carolinians with disabilities and propose solutions to ensure that everyone has access to the services and opportunities they deserve. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize March 4, 2026, as "Disability Advocacy Day" in South Carolina.

This last month, South Carolina experienced unprecedented winter weather that brought challenges to our community. During these harsh conditions, the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office collaborated with our agency to provide transportation for our staff and individuals who we serve, ensuring our excellence of care was undisrupted during that time.

We showed our appreciation with a lunch to the sheriff's office, and our Executive Director, Laura Collins, issued a statement to the sheriff's office, thanking everyone who assisted us during this time with our utmost gratitude!

In the spirit of Halloween week, our Day Services Program has been celebrating with specially themed days for our individuals to dress up in their best costumes. Yesterday was a western theme, encouraging all cowboy and cowgirl fits for a rootin' tootin' time!

We've been exploring and expanding our creative sides lately here at the Fairfield County DSN Board, all thanks to the exceptional lessons provided by Fairfield County's own Ms. Christy Buchanan!

Our agency has long been developing an architectural feat to better serve those with disabilities within our community, and now, that plan has come to fruition. Stage 1 of this project was completed in the fall of 2024, which consisted of laying walking trails on a 5-acre park behind our Day Program facility, allowing our individuals to utilize the space to promote their health and well-being. This park will harbor an abundance of local flora and will eventually provide an amphitheater dedicated to the betterment of those we serve.

On July 18th, 2025, an anonymous benefactor came forward to donate a grant to cover the cost of completing the proposed landscaping, estimated to be $22,000, to ensure its longevity and harmonization with the local environment. This challenge grant will be met dollar-for-dollar up to $22,000 in hopes to not only raise the anticipated cost of the completed landscaping, but to move forward with the next steps, Stage 2, in implementing benches and covered picnic areas.
