As if the wind hasn't been enough to deal with lately, flu season is here and the number of reported influenza cases in Alaska has recently spiked.

Characteristics of influenza include abrupt onset of fever, cough, and muscle aches. Other common symptoms are headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, and a general sense of discomfort.

Children, adults over 65 years, and people who have a weakened immune system may have fewer typical symptoms. The best way to make the diagnosis is with a flu test.

Influenza can be treated with antiviral medication, which is most effective if started within 48 hours of symptom onset.
Antibiotics are not used because influenza is a virus, not a bacteria.

If you have been thinking about getting a flu vaccine but have been putting it off, it's not too late. It takes approximately 2 weeks to develop peak antibody protection, and it's still early in the flu season.

If vaccination isn't part of your routine, prioritizing immune health is important. Stay hydrated, get enough rest, and listen to your body if you start to feel run down.
