Good h**p starts with good ground. Whether you're working with silty river-bottom land in the Mat-Su Valley, volcanic soil on the Kenai, or cleared ground in the Interior β€” understanding your soil is the first step to a successful h**p crop.

H**p prefers well-drained soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and responds well to moderate nitrogen.

The good news?

Many Alaska soils can support h**p with proper testing and amendment.

Planting timing, seeding rates, and soil temperature all matter β€” and they look different up here than in the Lower 48.

Get the details from someone who grows h**p in similar conditions. Jeff Kostuik with Verve Seeds in Manitoba, Canada joins us to share practical, northern-climate growing knowledge.

Could this be why industry has been shut down in America and Alaska?
What do you think about this take? Should we protect the environment over the prosperity of humans?

🌾 HAY CUSTOMERS

Big news for next years harvest. We will be transitioning to a U-pick model for our hay products. Bring your own scythe, or rent them from us. Bring your own labor or rent my kids (oldest is three so bear with him)

Also proud to say our grass is now vegan! Im not sure what vegans eat, but knock yourself out! It’s probably delicious.

Alaskans spend some of the highest amounts in the nation on heating. What if the solution was growing in our own fields?

H**p insulation offers:
πŸ”₯ Superior thermal performance β€” keeps heat IN during our -40Β° winters
πŸ”₯ Natural moisture regulation β€” prevents mold (a huge issue in Alaska homes)
πŸ”₯ Non-toxic β€” no fiberglass, no formaldehyde, no itchy pink stuff
πŸ”₯ Carbon-negative lifecycle
πŸ”₯ Fire resistant
When you insulate with h**p, you're not just cutting your heating bill β€” you're investing in a product that can be grown, processed, and manufactured right here in Alaska.
Every dollar spent on h**p insulation is a dollar that could stay in our local economy.

Here's something most people don't realize: Alaska's long summer daylight hours are actually an advantage for growing h**p.

H**p is a photoperiod-sensitive plant, meaning it responds to day length. Our 18–20+ hours of summer sunlight can fuel incredible vegetative growth before the plant transitions to flowering.

That's not a limitation β€” it's a superpower.
Understanding how to work with Alaska's light cycle is key to a successful h**p harvest, and it's exactly what we'll be diving into at our next meeting.

Jeff Kostuik from Verve Seeds in Manitoba, Canada will be teaching us how to grow h**p in northern latitudes β€” including how to use our daylight to our advantage.

Did you know h**p is one of the few crops that actually thrives in northern climates?

With its natural hardiness and fast growth cycle, h**p is uniquely suited for Alaska's growing conditions.

It doesn't need tropical heat β€” it needs long days, cool nights, and good soil.

Sound familiar?

Farmers in Canada, Scandinavia, and the Baltics have been proving this for decades.

Now it's Alaska's turn.

Want to learn how to grow h**p in our northern climate? Join the Alaska Farm Bureau H**p Program for a special presentation from Jeff Kostuik with Verve Seeds out of Manitoba, Canada β€” one of the leading voices in northern-latitude h**p cultivation.

Imagine a building material that:
🏠 Is naturally insulating (perfect for Alaska winters)
🏠 Is fire-resistant
🏠 Is mold and pest resistant
🏠 Gets stronger over time as it absorbs CO2
🏠 Is made from a crop grown right here in Alaska
It exists. It's called HEMPCRETE.
H**pcrete is a biocomposite made from the inner core (hurd) of h**p stalks mixed with lime. It's been used in construction across Europe for decades and is now gaining ground in the U.S.
In a state where building costs are sky-high and heating bills are brutal, h**pcrete offers a locally-sourced, affordable, energy-efficient alternative.
This is what Green Build Composites is working to bring to Alaska.
