Caring for a child with feeding challenges can get very frustrating! It's easy for caregivers to pressure these kids to eat but pushing a picky eater during mealtimes will almost always backfire, leading to every meal becoming a battle of wills.
Pressure causes stress in a child. When a child perceives stress, their adrenaline levels shoot up and they go into "fight or flight" mode, which essentially “shuts off” the hunger feelings within their body. In other words, stress shuts off hunger!
Here are some alternatives responses when you hear "I don't like that!" or "I'm not eating that!" during a meal.
