We help children and young adults with disabilities develop the tools and skills they need to find their place in the world. For some, that's exploring career opportunities during their time at Perkins and beyond.

At our Work Experience Open House, Perkins students met with representatives from on-campus departments and local organizations in and beyond. They asked questions, explored different roles, and some even shared a and they had prepared as part of their learning.

Events like this give students real-world exposure to careers and professional skills, like how to present themselves to employers. We’re grateful to our local partners for supporting our students in discovering their strengths and exploring new opportunities right here in our community.

Learning how to read and write isn’t one-size-fits-all.

At Perkins and beyond, students access literacy in ways that align with how they individually see, process, and engage: braille, symbols, print, audio, dictation, story boxes, and much more. Each approach is chosen because it’s accessible, meaningful, and motivating for that learner.

When we expand how literacy can look, we expand access for everyone – including our learners with the leading cause of childhood blindness. 💙

During we celebrate all the ways students with Cerebral /Cortical Visual Impairment access literacy. 🥳 CVI Now

For students who are , learning comes alive through touch. In this lesson, Declan and his teacher Kris use 3D models to explore isomers: compounds that have the same molecular formula but different arrangements of atoms, which gives them different properties.

By feeling the shape and structure of each model, Declan can compare how the same set of atoms can be organized in different ways. This kind of hands-on learning makes abstract concepts more concrete, building understanding through direct, tactile experience.

Real-life experiences play a key role helping young adults with disabilities build independence.

At our Cooking for Life Weekend, students got hands-on in the kitchen:

⏲️ Exploring appliances like microwaves, ovens, and stovetops with tactile markers

🔪 Practicing cutting and chopping with techniques and tools

🥦 Planning meals, learning nutrition, and practicing cleaning routines—all skills they can use at home and in their communities.
