AGE WITH GRACE AND HEALTH

We are living longer and, if you play your cards right and have taken care of yourself, this is a wonderful thing. Good genes certainly help, but healthy lifestyle practices are just as important in continuing to live a productive life. Here are some tips the American Chiropractic Association recommends for aging with grace and health:

Human touch is important. Try to maintain regular interaction with relatives and friends. Stay in touch with friends and relatives. For one thing, when things are not going well, it’s comforting to have someone to talk to. And on the flip side, it’s fun to have someone with whom to share good news.

Just as exercise is good for the body, so is mental stimulation good for the mind. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities. Maybe take up a new language or an instrument or take a class at a nearby high school or college. Something as simple — or challenging — as doing a crossword puzzle can be a way to keep your mind active.

Focus on the positive things in your life. It’s easy to dwell on the new ache or pain that’s descended on you, but researchers have found a positive outlook can help with general health.

As mentioned above, exercise is a critical component. Even a 30-minute walk three or four times a week can help with weight control, muscle tone and cardiovascular health.

Talk with your chiropractor about other techniques for enjoying life.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE AND STRESS

Managing the stress in your life — and most of us have it to one degree or another — is essential to keeping a healthy lifestyle. Stress comes from many directions and makes itself known in a variety of ways. It might show up as a headache, tight muscles, nausea or back pain. It’s generally caused by outside factors, some obvious, like fretting over financial problems, and others not so much, planning for a joyous occasion like an impending wedding.

But stress is not always a minor problem. It can lead to bigger problems, like high blood pressure and stroke, ulcers and fitful sleeping. Your body reacts to stress by producing adrenaline and noradrenaline, both of which are linked to our fight-or-flight instinct. Nerve cells secrete those substances. Since your spinal column is critical in the function of the nervous system, chiropractic treatment is effective in helping with stress control.

Misaligned vertebrae — called a subluxation in chiropractic parlance — can interfere with the proper operation of the nerves. A subluxation can impede the normal activity of a nerve, like the anti-stress function it performs.

Chiropractors can’t eliminate the stress in your life, but they can make sure your body is at its best to respond to it. Talk with your chiropractor about stress management.

TAKE A WALK

Walking may be, pound for pound, the most accessible, beneficial and inexpensive form of exercise available. The American Chiropractic Association recommends it as a way to stay fit.

Accessible? Walk out your front door and get started. Beneficial? Walking will strengthen your lungs, heart and circulation. It will ease stress, improve cholesterol levels and kick your metabolism into high gear. It will also help you control blood pressure and your weight. And it will tone the muscles in your legs and abdomen. Inexpensive? A comfortable, supportive pair of shoes designed for walking is your only required investment.

When contemplating any new form of exercise, you should consult with your medical doctor to make sure you’re up to it. As with any new exercise program, don’t overdo it and try to make up for lost time. Overdoing it might cause soreness or even a minor injury that will keep you from exercising. A five- to ten-minute walk three to five times a week is a good way to start. And you can stretch the duration and pace of the walking from there. Be sure to stretch a little before and after walking. This will protect your muscles and help keep them limber. Talk with your chiropractor for more information on the benefits of walking.

Health is not obtained through one adjustment. Health is a journey that requires wise choices over many months or years. Chiropractic feels the same way. Chiropractors do not want to be a one stop shop, they want to help you along your journey to health. Regular chiropractic adjustments may optimize the communication between your nervous and musculoskeletal systems. This healthy communication increases the likelihood of you achieving your health goals.

FROZEN SHOULDER
‘Frozen shoulder’ is a term sometimes used loosely in connection with any type of persistent shoulder pain. But specifically it is the loss of arm movement at the shoulder joint. The shoulder is the part of the body that is the third most common subject for chiropractic treatment, the lower back and the neck being the two most common.

Frozen shoulder can be brought on by the trauma of a fall or car accident, or it may come on gradually as a result of muscle imbalance, overuse and irritation. Shoulder pain often stems from a problem in the cervical spine, the upper portion of the spine that is, essentially, the neck. Nerves that send and receive signals from the shoulders, arms and hands pass through the vertebrae of that part of the spine. If these nerves are being obstructed by a vertebra or vertebrae that are out of line, shoulder muscles can grow tight or weak and pull the joint out of line.

Golf, tennis or any sport or regular activity that requires repetitive motion of the shoulder can strain the muscles and cause pain. As the pain intensifies, people tend to reduce use of the shoulder. This is a problem because all the parts of the joint will simply adjust to the reduced range of motion. Eventually, a person will lose use of the shoulder.

Chiropractic treatment can address the cervical spine issues if they are at the root of the problem. Talk with your chiropractor about maintaining the proper function of your shoulders.

CHIROPRACTIC FOR THE GOOD TIMES

Regarding many forms of health care, people will sometimes ask: If I’m feeling good, why do I need it? In terms of chiropractic treatment, one answer could be, “Are you feeling the best you could be?” Are you reaching maximum capacity?

The spine, and the nerves that run through it and emanate from it, is the central communication route between the brain and the rest of the body. Even a slight misalignment in the individual bones that make up the spine — they’re called the vertebrae — can affect the quality of the signal that passes through them. The obstruction could be so minimal that you don’t even notice it until it’s fixed, or it could be such that it causes pain and impairs the function of a particular body part.

These misalignments, in chiropractic parlance, are called subluxations. Chiropractors are trained in, among other things, the art and science of keeping the vertebrae in proper alignment. Manually adjusting the spine is the hallmark of the chiropractor, though there are other techniques available.

Of course, if you’re not feeling all that great, suffering, say, from lower back pain, chiropractic treatment can be very effective in easing that condition. Professional athletes routinely use chiropractic treatment as a way to enhance performance. Enhance your lifestyle in general and visit a chiropractor.
