You stretched
You opened, body and soul.
You worked hard
And you persevered when it got even harder.
You climbed the mountain, touched the heavens, and came back with your baby.
FINALLY, they are on your chest, you smell their head and touch their moist skin.
You did it!
And then you remember, or maybe someone, or the cramps in your womb, remind you that birth isn't over yet!
(Yes, more contractions 🤪)
The placenta, the second mother, who nourished your baby for all those months has yet to be born.
This precious time between birth of your baby and birth of their placenta can be anywhere from 5 minutes to over an hour.
The cord is pulsing up to 30% of baby's into their body as they adjust to life earth side.
Hormones are carefully supporting these biological functions, and that bonding you're experiencing as you explore your baby and they look for your breast.
This is an important, sensitive, and often least considered part of birth.
When making a plan for your birth desires, location, and support team, don't forget to give careful thought to what you want your immediate postpartum time, and the precious golden hour, to look like.
A doula may be a great addition to your support team to help provide education around this time, hold space, and help advocate for your immediate postpartum wishes when the birth day arrives.
