🛡️ Veterans, Protect Yourself from Fraud 🛡️
The VA’s Fraud Prevention page has some important information every veteran and their family should know. Fraud is when someone misrepresents information to get benefits or payments they don’t deserve. Bad actors are using many tactics to target veterans. Some of the most common scams include:
Direct‑deposit/payment redirection: Someone steals or uses your info to reroute benefit payments.
Identity theft & phishing: Scammers pretend to be trusted entities (by email, phone, texts) to get your personal information.
Claims predators: Individuals or companies who try to charge veterans to file initial VA claims or promise to speed up the process or boost disability ratings—often illegally and with misleading guarantees.
Pension poaching, education scams, Romance & friendship scams, and fraud involving Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) are also on the rise.
✅ How to Avoid Being Scammed:
Always use VA’s official channels (VA.gov, regional offices) when applying for or managing benefits.
Never pay anyone to help file an initial claim. Accredited VA reps, VSOs (Veteran Service Organizations), and attorneys are available—some for free, some for a fee only for appeals, etc.—but verify their status.
Be suspicious of high‑pressure phone calls, demands for upfront payments, or forms you are asked to sign without seeing all the details.
Protect your personal info (SSN, bank details, login credentials) and don’t click on untrusted links.
