Several years ago while my mother was in the hospital, she was told that her salt content would need to be lowered but she was allowed all the sugar she wanted.
My dad, who died of liver cancer, was told by his doctors that sugar wasn’t bad for him and he could have anything he wanted. There was no discussion on how cancer feeds on sugar. In the end his cancer was far too advanced and I would get him anything he wanted. But there should be real conversations with cancer patients to cut sugar from their diet.
Recently I visited a friend in the hospital, who happens to be diabetic. I watched in horror on 2 separate occasions as they brought him a sandwich with 2 slices of bread for lunch. One time they brought him orange juice with his sandwich and on the next visit it was accompanied with a fruit cup in syrup.
I had a 5 minute phone call with a doctor who had never laid eyes on me and had absolutely no idea what I eat on a regular basis inform me that I do not eat well and she needed to refer me to a nutritionist.
I had received that same recommendation in 2018, and I did have 1, and only 1, appointment with their “diabetic nutritionist.” On that visit I was asked what I had for breakfast that morning, and because of how she responded I will never forget it. On that particular morning I had salad greens, 1/2 an avocado, 1/4 of a grapefruit, and 2 over easy eggs. I was told that I’m “doing better than most” but I needed to make corrections. Her suggestions were to cut my avocado to 1/8, increase my grapefruit to 1/2 and to add a slice of toast. I knew that her recommendation would ultimately increase the sugar I was consuming and would do nothing to help improve my blood sugar.
From where I am sitting, it appears that the medical industry and the nutritionist would rather push a diet that ultimately keeps their patients sick. For what? To keep them coming back for more and more pharmaceutical treatment for the sole purpose of putting more money in their pockets? Now I’m not saying that pharmaceuticals are not needed sometimes, but what would happen if we actually taught good, healthy nutrition? How much better off would we be if taught more prevention (healthcare) rather than pushing pharmaceuticals for symptoms (sick care)?
After long-term use of one diabetic medication absolutely destroyed my gut, I have personally made the decision to control my blood sugar with the help of natural supplementation and proper diet, working to solve the problem at its root.
I have decided that I would share what I eat, the supplements I take, and the things that are successfully working to help me regain my health on a more regular basis. My sincere hope is that others will be able to use this information to improve their own health.
My breakfast this morning: A roasted portabella mushroom cap and cherry tomatoes topped with salad greens and over easy eggs.
