Phil starts with a simple, common sense approach of training horses to understand people and teaching people to understand horses. Over the past twenty-five years, Phil has competed in over 1,000 rodeos, qualifying for both the Badlands Circuit Finals and the Prairie Circuit Finals. Winning at both ends of the arena-rough stock and timed events-led to Phil winning the coveted Linderman Award in 1989. In addition to providing the training and discipline to get both horse and rider ready for top-level competition, Phil has developed his own unique colt starting program that consists of developing a horse/rider relationship based on trust and respect, which establishes a strong set of fundamentals. He has had over 1500 horses in training with an Equistat earnings of over $1,000,000. Phil and his family currently reside at the Haugen Training Facility in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Whether at home, in the rodeo arena, or at a clinic near you, each of Phil's experiences contribute to and reinforce his philosophy of "Training through understanding".

In this week’s episode of the podcast, I’m talking about the importance of playing to your horse’s strengths. One of the biggest responsibilities we have as horsemen and women is to be good leaders — and a big part of leadership is recognizing the strengths of those we lead.

Just like people, every horse has a different set of strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Our job is to identify what those are and set them up for success.

Tune in as I share tips for how to identify your horse’s natural tendencies and why doing so can strengthen their confidence, willingness, and longevity.

In this week’s episode of the podcast, I’m talking about one of the simplest—and hardest—skills to master in horsemanship: the pause.

The pause is the brief moment of release and reward that tells your horse, “You did it right.” It’s the part of the process that builds confidence, clarity, and understanding between horse and rider. But it’s also the step that many of us—myself included—tend to rush through.

Tune in as I share how developing better self-awareness and patience can transform your communication with your horse, how the pause teaches effort and confidence, and why slowing down might be the most productive thing you can do in your training.

Is your horse’s water too cold? 🥶 When water gets icy, horses drink less, and that can lead to dehydration or even impaction colic.

Horses prefer water that’s around 45–65°F, this helps them stay hydrated, digest hay better, and maintain body warmth through winter.

Whenever possible keep buckets and tanks ice-free with a heated bucket or tank heater.

💬 How do you keep your horse’s water from freezing in the cold? Share your best winter barn hacks below!
