❤️ Friday, Feb. 6 was National Wear Red Day ❤️ and the team at Van Diest Medical Center and Van Diest Family Health Clinic donned their red shirts to honor the millions of women affected by heart disease and stroke and to raise awareness about the #1 killer of women. ❤️ Friday, Feb. 6 is National Wear Red Day ❤️
Today we wear red with purpose — to honor the millions of women affected by heart disease and stroke and to raise awareness about the #1 killer of women.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women — more than all forms of cancer combined. Nearly 45% of women age 20 and older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease.

This National Wear Red Day, we stand together to educate, inspire, and remind one another that heart disease and stroke are largely preventable with awareness, healthy habits, and early detection.

Let’s wear red, share these facts with the women we love — our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends — and commit to taking steps toward better heart health.

Kent Harms has been a valued member of Van Diest Medical Center’s Environmental Services Department for the past 19 years, serving as a floor specialist and helping keep our hospital clean, welcoming, and looking its best. Kent takes pride in his work and enjoys the visible impact it has throughout the building.

“I like making the building look better from cleaning floors and carpets and other areas,” Kent shared.

One of the things Kent appreciates most about VDMC is the people. “I enjoy working with everyone here,” he said, noting the friendly atmosphere that makes each day enjoyable.

Outside of work, Kent enjoys spending time outdoors fishing and camping, along with making memories with his family. He also proudly became a grandfather in October 2022—a role he treasures just as much as his work at VDMC.

Proud of the caregivers we have caring for you at Van Diest Medical Center!

Michelle’s nomination read:

Michelle is the best example of our CARES values. She has gone out of her way and stayed late while we were short staffed and made sure that all of our Iowa Heart patients were called back and that they were not left waiting. Just watching her work shows you that she has a heart of gold and gives every patient her undivided attention. I just watched her with a patient who came in because he needed a refill on his medication, and he was hard of hearing. She was so patient with him and wrote things down for him so he understood everything. She is also quick to make sure that the nurses and even the doctors have everything they need. She is detail oriented and is just amazing at her job.

Michelle, we appreciate your dedication to a great patient experience, compassion and customer service. We are so proud of you and you are very deserving of this award!
