🧠 Understanding the Brain Helps Us Support the Whole Child

A child’s brain is constantly growing, developing, and strengthening important skills every day. Each part of the brain plays a unique role in helping children learn, regulate emotions, pay attention, and interact with the world around them.

✨ For example:
• The frontal lobe helps with focus, planning, and self-control
• The temporal lobe supports language and understanding
• The hippocampus helps form memories
• The cerebellum supports coordination and movement

When children struggle with attention, emotional regulation, learning, or behavior, it often reflects how their brain is developing not a lack of effort.

At Growing Minds Psychology, we provide comprehensive evaluations and support to better understand your child’s unique brain and help them thrive.

💜 Early understanding leads to stronger outcomes.
💜 Knowledge empowers families.
💜 Support helps children reach their full potential.

🧠 Did you know chores help build executive functioning skills?

While chores may feel like “just another task,” they actually play a powerful role in helping children develop important life skills!

When kids help around the house, they’re practicing:

✔️ Planning & organization
✔️ Task initiation (getting started!)
✔️ Working memory
✔️ Time management
✔️ Attention & focus
✔️ Responsibility and self-monitoring

For children with ADHD or executive functioning challenges, simple, consistent chores paired with support and encouragement can be a meaningful way to build independence and confidence over time.

Start small, keep expectations clear, and celebrate effort along the way 💗

✨ Understanding Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) ✨

For some children and teens, everyday demands can feel overwhelming not because they won’t comply, but because anxiety makes it feel impossible in the moment.

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is often misunderstood. It’s not laziness, defiance, or poor parenting. It’s an anxiety-driven response where even simple requests can trigger distress.

💡 What helps?
✔️ Reducing pressure
✔️ Offering choices and shared control
✔️ Using collaborative, flexible approaches
✔️ Prioritizing emotional safety and connection

When we shift from “Why won’t they?” to “What’s making this hard?”, real support can begin.

💗 Neuroaffirming support starts with understanding.

🌟 TIP TUESDAY: Building Executive Functioning Skills 🌟

Executive functioning skills are the brain’s management system helping children plan, organize, manage emotions, and follow through on tasks.

✨ Quick Ways to Support Executive Skills at Home:

🗂️ Break tasks into small steps (one step at a time feels doable!)

⏰ Use visual schedules or timers to support time management

🧠 Practice flexible thinking when plans change

📋 Create simple routines for mornings, homework, and bedtime

💬 Model problem-solving out loud so kids can learn your thinking process

Remember: Executive functioning skills develop over time they aren’t about effort or motivation. With the right supports, kids can learn strategies that help them thrive at school and at home. 💕

🌟 Tip Tuesday: Self-Regulation Strategies 🌟

Self-regulation helps children (and adults!) manage big emotions, focus attention, and respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

💡 Try these simple strategies:

🧠 Name the Feeling
Help children label emotions (“I feel frustrated”) to reduce emotional intensity.

🌬️ Pause & Breathe
Teach slow breathing (smell the flower, blow out the candle) to calm the nervous system.

⏸️ Take a Regulation Break
Movement, stretching, or a quiet space can help reset emotions.

🗣️ Use Coping Tools
Fidgets, visuals, calming music, or positive self-talk can support regulation.

💜 Self-regulation is a skill and skills grow with practice, patience, and support.

✨ Tip Tuesday: Growth Mindset & Self-Reflection ✨

When a child is struggling, it’s easy to focus on the behavior we see.
A growth mindset invites us to pause, reflect, and get curious instead.

💭 Instead of asking “What’s wrong?”
➡️ Try asking “What’s going on underneath this behavior?”

Self-regulation isn’t something children should already know it’s a skill that develops with support, modeling, and practice. When we shift from judgment to curiosity, we create space for learning, connection, and growth.

Small mindset shifts can make a big difference for children and the adults supporting them.

Getting Back Into School Routines After a Break

School breaks can disrupt sleep, structure, and emotional regulation. When routines feel hard again, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong—it means your child is adjusting.
Tips:

🕰 Reset gradually
Shift bedtime, wake-up, and homework routines a little each day instead of all at once.

📋 Make routines visible
Visual schedules and checklists reduce reminders and power struggles.

🧠 Explain the “why”
Children are more cooperative when they understand expectations (“Routines help our brains feel calm and ready.”)

💗 Focus on connection first
Start routines with a moment of positive attention before giving directions.

🌊 Expect pushback and stay consistent
Resistance is part of transition. Calm consistency builds regulation over time.

Routines aren’t about control they’re about helping children feel safe, supported, and capable as they return to school.
