A shout out to my dry eye specialists out there that work so hard for patients best outcomes! It takes work ………

Dry Eye Specialty exams cannot be covered in 15-20 minutes and this is why my dry eye center exists! I know many colleagues of mine understand that when we took the initiative to open these centers, we also didn’t realize there is SO much education on public awareness and when in the exam room about all the collective parts of the eye that make up a persons dry eye condition that needs to be addressed!

You become quickly proficient in, how can I condense the education but still be effective!

Well, pracrice makes perfect! Perfecting how I explain each condition,
Starting outwards with the addressing the eyelashes/eyelids and how inflammation we are looking for in every layer of the eye!

Eyelids/lashes = bacteria harbors inflammation! Looking to see if this is contributing

Meibomian glands structure and function!
Rosacea?
Cornea inflammation?
Conjunctival chalasis?

List goes on!

Most patients are very thankful for the time that is taken to educate them every step of the way because they become a part of the plan and process which is what I’m looking for, teamwork makes the dream work!

Whole body wellness is key to patient care.
Often times, Eye Doctors are the first to diagnose this condition. You just have to ask the right questions and educate the patient that this may be stemming from an autoimmune condition, send to P*P or Rheumatology for testing. Build your network, be the change.

It’s important to have a questionnaire in your office even if you don’t treat dry eye, but to be able to send to a colleague nearby.

Network with your local Dry Eye Specialist and your patient will thank you dividends!

It’s always important to rule out autoimmune conditions in any dry eye patient.

Ask the right questions. Even if they are there for a wellness eye exam.
