Sometimes I look around and see the beauty of this work. The art, the calling, the sacred trust we hold in our hands, and yet my heart aches.
Because among that beauty, I also see walls. I see cliques and quiet divides. I see gifted people standing shoulder to shoulder in the same room, but miles apart in spirit.
And it hurts deeply.
We are called to be healers, not just of bodies, but of communities. Yet how can we heal the world if we cannot first find healing among ourselves?
It should not matter the color of our skin, the letters behind our names, the way we worship, or the style of care we believe in.
Whether we use Dopplers or fetoscopes, speak from faith or science, or carry different traditions and training. We are all midwives.
We are guardians of life, and that should be enough to bind us.
Unity is not uniformity. It is not agreement on every technique or philosophy.
It is the willingness to honor one another, to see each other’s hearts before our differences. When we come together, something powerful happens! Midwifery grows from a calling into a movement!
We begin to stand tall enough to be heard, strong enough to be respected, and united enough to create real change.
Because the truth is, the world is watching. Families are watching. Policymakers, physicians, and hospitals are watching. They will take us seriously when we take each other seriously! When we choose collaboration over competition, and when we defend one another with the same passion we defend those we serve.
Let’s build bridges where walls have been. Let’s gather, not as factions, but as kin. Different hands, one heartbeat.
Together, we can transform maternal care, strengthen birth centers, and home birth, while bringing hope to the deserts that have gone too long without it.
May our unity become the revival midwifery has been waiting for.
May we be known not just for catching life, but for catching each other. BEFORE we fall apart. Lucie Bryant, Midwife
