🗣️ What is Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)?

Childhood apraxia of speech is a speech disorder where a child knows what they want to say, but their brain has trouble planning and coordinating the movements needed to say the words. The muscles aren’t weak—the message from the brain just doesn’t always get through clearly.

You might notice:
• The same word said differently each time
• Trouble putting sounds together
• Speech that’s hard to understand, especially with longer words

✨ How can speech therapy help?

Speech therapy for CAS focuses on:
• Teaching the brain how to plan speech movements
• Practicing sounds and words through repetition
• Using visual, verbal, and tactile cues to support learning

With consistent, specialized speech therapy, children with CAS can make meaningful progress and grow their communication skills over time.

🩵 Every child’s journey looks different—and support makes a difference.

Before words come gestures—and they matter more than we realize 💬✨

For early communicators, gestures are powerful tools that build the foundation for language, social connection, and shared attention. They help children express wants, interact with others, and learn that communication works—often long before spoken words appear.

🌟 5 Gestures to Teach Early Communicators:
👋 Waving – builds social interaction and greetings
✋ High five – encourages imitation and turn-taking
😘 Blowing a kiss – supports motor planning and expressive intent
👉 Pointing – strengthens joint attention and requesting
🤲 Giving – teaches sharing, reciprocity, and back-and-forth interaction

Gestures reduce frustration, support understanding, and often lead to spoken words over time. When we model and celebrate gestures, we’re supporting communication in its earliest and most meaningful form.

Small movements. Big communication wins. 🫶

Those tiny movements tell a BIG story ✨

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns we’re born with to help with survival and early development (think rooting, Moro, ATNR). As the brain matures, these reflexes are meant to integrate—making room for purposeful, controlled movement.

At Add Therapy Center our OT will test primitive reflexes through gentle, play-based observations and specific movement patterns. We’re not “looking for problems”—we’re looking for clues. 🧩
Clues about balance, coordination, attention, emotional regulation, fine motor skills, and even how a child moves through their day.

When reflexes stick around longer than expected, they can impact learning and daily function. The good news? With the right supports and therapeutic activities, the nervous system can grow and adapt. 🌱

Movement matters. Development matters. And understanding reflexes helps us support the whole child. 💙

Food before bites. Play before pressure. 💛

In the Toleration Step of the SOS Feeding Approach (developed by Dr. Kay Toomey), we’re not focused on eating yet—we’re focused on comfort. Can a child tolerate a food being on the table? On their plate? Near their hands?

✨ Food play = learning
Touching, squishing, smelling, stacking, and building safety and trust with food. These moments help regulate the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and lay the foundation for future tasting and eating.

Engagement without pressure teaches children that food is safe—and that’s where real progress begins. 🌱

Trust the process. Honor the steps. Progress happens one interaction at a time. 🥕🍓

✨ Let’s talk about stimming ✨

Stimming (self-stimulatory behavior) is a natural and meaningful way many neurodivergent children regulate their bodies, express emotions, and make sense of the world.

Stimming can look different for every child, including:
🖐️ Tactile – touching textures, squeezing, rubbing
👀 Visual – watching movement, lights, or patterns
👂 Auditory – humming, repeating sounds, listening closely
🔁 Or a combination of all of the above

💛 Stimming is okay.
It’s communication. It’s regulation. It’s not something that automatically needs to be stopped or “fixed.”

When we honor stimming, we honor a child’s needs, comfort, and autonomy. Our role is to support safety and understanding—not suppression.

Have questions about stimming or sensory needs?

School Services vs. Private Practice — both support kids, just in different ways 💬✏️🧠

School-based SLP & OT services focus on helping students access their education. Therapy targets skills that impact learning, classroom participation, and school success—and services are provided at no cost through the school system.

Private practice SLP & OT services can focus on the whole child to involve the family more, and have flexibility within goal development. Therapy can address skills at home, in the community, and beyond academics, with more flexibility, individualized goals, and often longer 1:1 sessions.

✨ Different settings. Different goals. Same mission: helping children thrive.
Many families find that school services and private therapy can work together to provide well-rounded support.

Have questions about what’s right for your child? 📩
Reach out to us—we’re happy to help!
