November is National Diabetes Month. Diabetes affects more than 30 million people in the US. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune condition and requires more monitoring, whereas Type 2 is caused by insulin resistance and is more preventable. By eating a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, properly taking medications, and staying hydrated, you can potentially lessen the side effects of this condition.

Today, we hosted an information booth and interactive display for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), where Live Well members had the opportunity to learn facts about the disease and simulate what it feels like to breath with blockages and lesser lung capacity. Today is World Pneumonia Day. Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs that causes the air sacs to be filled with fluid. Breathing then becomes difficult because oxygen levels are reduced. Pneumonia affects over 400,000 people each year and is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years old. It is much more prevalent in countries like Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia due to air pollution. Air pollution is caused by to***co smoke, paint, dust, exhaust from vehicles, and pollutants from industries. The best ways to prevent pneumonia is by getting vaccinated, eating fruits and vegetables, and avoiding smoking.

Stress is our way of protecting ourselves from harm. Some stress can be good for you, but too much stress causes harm to our health and relationships. National Stress Awareness Day helps bring this to our attention. Identifying stressors in your life is very important; identifying ways to eliminate stress by developing coping skills, letting go of things you cannot change, eating a balanced diet, and doing calming activities is even more important. Take a moment to unwind and practice self-care today!

October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Sudden cardiac arrest is often compared to a heart attack, but the two are very different. A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Sudden cardiac arrest is when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. In 95% of sudden cardiac cases, the victim is lost. Every year, more than 350,000 people die as a result of cardiac arrest. In fact, sudden cardiac arrest (or SCA) kills one person every two minutes. When somebody has cardiac arrest, call 911, perform CPR if you are trained, and use a defibrillator.
