Let’s Pride on every day of the year; not just this month! As Pride month starts let’s reflect on its origin at the start of the modern LGBTQ+ liberation movement in the 1970s. Pride tends to be distinctly local and generally tied in some way to the foundational Stonewall Uprising.

As always, two things can be true at once. So as we step into being proud, liberated, and celebrate either as part of the Q***r community or as an ally, let’s be aware of the issues surrounding Pride month, such as its ties with racism and transphobia. There are many local examples of how lack of intersectional Pride events transpired in Boston with the city Pride disbanding.

It’s such an awkward, challenging, and at the same time privileged time in the world to engage in a social media account as a licensed therapist. I don’t want to post quotes, write information not based in research, or just populate this space with beautifully designed content. I want to verbalize so many things as a human, immigrant, q***r person, and an empath feeling it for all the humans experiencing suffering right now. Do I get into it? Do I utilize this as a space to communicate what is relevant to me as a professional? Do I talk about where I stand as an activist & the way it impacts my clients’ healing? And many other questions race through my mind as I debate my small existence to even be relevant enough to engage with you in this way. Maybe I get to do parts of it all, as I continue my ongoing work to address personal biases, become aware of how I might be committing micro-aggressions, acknowledge my differences/privilege, & continue to express my commitment to inclusivity. I might have a couple degrees, be licensed as a psychotherapist in two states, & have 7+ years of experience in this field — I still wake up everyday asking myself is what I do enough — what can I learn from you, me, & the world around us.
