The real barrier to buying an AED isn't the price, it's everything else.
We talk to companies all the time who know AEDs save lives. They've seen the data. They understand the value.

But then the questions start:
• Who's responsible?
• Who maintains it?
• Who gets trained?
• What if someone uses it wrong?
• What if we get sued?

And honestly? That hesitation makes sense. An AED isn't just a box on the wall. It comes with real responsibility policies, training, maintenance, documentation. You need people who know what to do when something actually happens. That's exactly why Bill 30 exists. The goal isn't just getting AEDs into buildings. It's getting them into workplaces where they're properly supported with trained teams, clear procedures, and regular maintenance.

You can't just buy the equipment. You need to own the responsibility that comes with it. And we're here to help you do exactly that. Because when your workplace is prepared, you're not just protecting your team, you're empowering them.

"Don't I need to be trained to use an AED?"

This question comes up all the time, and it's holding people back. The truth is, you don't need training to use an AED in an emergency.

AEDs are designed for anyone to use. The device analyzes the heart rhythm and only shocks if needed. If a shock isn't required, nothing happens. The machine makes the decision, not you.

When someone collapses and isn't responding, call 911, start CPR, and turn on the AED. Once it's on, it walks you through every step with voice prompts. You're just following instructions.
The real danger isn't using the AED wrong. It's not using it at all because you're worried about making a mistake.

Training matters for workplaces and builds confidence. But in public, if someone needs help and you're there, act. Turn it on. Listen. You could save their life.

Cardiac arrest vs. heart attack: what's the difference and why does it matter? These terms get mixed up all the time. That confusion can cost valuable time.

The difference is simple:
Heart attack = blockage. Blood has trouble getting to the heart.
Cardiac arrest = electrical problem. The heart stops beating. The person collapses and becomes unresponsive.
A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest. But cardiac arrest needs immediate action.

In cardiac arrest, every second without CPR and an AED lowers survival chances. The brain can take damage in minutes.
If someone collapses and isn't responding:

→ Call 911
→ Start CPR
→ Get an AED

You don't need to be a doctor or 100% sure. Taking action gives them the best chance to survive.

Every person we train equals a dollar we give back. 💙

For every person who completes First Aid or CPR training with us, we donate $1 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Over the years, we've trained more than 3,000 individuals and donated more than $3,000 to support vital cardiac research and education.

This is what drives us: helping people learn life-saving skills while supporting the research that prevents emergencies in the first place. When you train with us, you're not just preparing yourself. You're joining a community that cares deeply about heart health and being there when it matters most.

Your training matters in more ways than one. Learn the skills, support the cause, and become someone's lifeline when seconds count.

Is Your AED Ready to Save a Life? ❤️

When a cardiac emergency strikes, every second counts. An AED can be the difference between life and death—but only if it's actually ready to work when you need it.
Many workplaces and community spaces have AEDs on hand, which is great. But here's the question we don't ask often enough: Is that AED prepared to perform?
Quick Monthly Checklist ✅

🔋 Battery – Check the indicator and expiration date. Dead battery = silent AED.

🩹 Electrode Pads – Pads dry out over time. Verify they haven't expired.

✅ Self-Test Status – Make sure your device shows "ready" with no warning lights.

📍 Accessibility – Is it clearly marked and easy to reach in an emergency?

📋 Training – Does your team know how to use it confidently?
A quick monthly check takes just a few minutes and could save someone's life. Is your AED ready? Take a moment today to find out. 💚

This Valentine's Day, we're thinking about hearts a little differently.
The best way to show you care? Be ready to protect the hearts around you.

Whether it's your coworkers, your family, or the stranger at the gym, knowing CPR and how to use an AED means you're prepared to act when someone's heart needs help most.

Love is action. And sometimes that action is lifesaving.
This February, give the gift that matters. Get trained. Stay prepared. Protect the hearts you care about.

Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at First Aid Canada. ❤️

A friend noticed an AED at the hockey rink and told me, "I'd be too afraid to use it. What if I hurt them?"

This is the most dangerous AED myth out there. People imagine TV drama with paddles, "CLEAR," and bodies jumping off tables. Real life is different.

Let me clear this up: An AED will NOT shock unless needed.
The device analyzes the heart rhythm first. If no shock is needed, it won't deliver one. End of story. The machine does the thinking. It just needs you to act.

We've seen people hesitate when someone collapses, waiting for certainty instead of acting. That costs time you don't have in cardiac arrest. If someone is unresponsive, hook it up. Even if you're unsure. You won't make it worse. You'll give them a chance they wouldn't have otherwise.

Training matters because it gives people confidence knowing the device protects both patient and responder. Doing something is almost always better than doing nothing.

Since February is , here's another important reminder: Canada's CPR guidelines were updated in October 2025.

If your workplace has first aid procedures or AEDs, this affects you.
The biggest change: CPR for children and infants now emphasizes rescue breaths, not just compressions. Cardiac emergencies in kids often start as breathing problems, so getting oxygen into their lungs early matters.

For adults, nothing changed. If someone collapses, push hard and fast on the chest. Other updates include more focus on opioid emergencies, scenario based training, and recognizing the emotional impact on responders.

Don't wait. Review your workplace procedures and training materials now. If your team was trained before October 2025, it's time for a refresh.
Need help updating your training or procedures? Get in touch. We'll make sure your team is prepared with the most current guidelines.

We do fire drills without question. Why don't we do CPR and AED drills? Fire drills work because when stress is high, people don't think clearly. They need a plan to fall back on.

We've walked into workplaces that seem prepared. First aid kits. AEDs. Certified staff. But if someone collapsed tomorrow, most teams would hesitate. Not because they don't care. Because they've never walked through what happens in that first minute. Everyone assumes someone else will call 911, grab the AED, take charge. That pause is where things fall apart.

The simplest thing a workplace can do? Take 30 minutes and walk through a scenario. Bob goes unconscious. Who calls 911? Who grabs the AED? Who stays with Bob? Who meets paramedics? Who clears the space? You're not practicing CPR itself. You're practicing the response before CPR starts. Removing uncertainty. Deciding roles before emotions take over.

Fire drills work because people already know what happens next.
Medical emergencies deserve that same discipline.

February is .
Most cardiac emergencies happen outside hospitals, and the first responder is usually an everyday person, not a doctor.

CPR and AEDs save lives. You don't need a medical degree. Just training, confidence, and the willingness to act.

This month, take care of your own heart. And consider learning how to protect someone else's. The strongest hearts are prepared.
