In 2025, a grocery chain came to us with a clear goal: make first aid and AED readiness consistent across all locations in one month.
They were dealing with the most common challenge we see with multi-location businesses: inconsistency. Different kits at different sites. Supplies and AEDs stored in various places. No clear system for inspections or restocking.

Unlike many who ignore these issues, they wanted to improve.
We started by listening. We took the time to understand their locations, their risks, and how their teams actually operate day to day.

Then we standardized the equipment. Same kits across all locations with consistent contents and layout so items were easy to find under pressure. AED placement that made sense for each space.

Next, we designed a simple, repeatable maintenance process so staff could quickly inspect kits, identify missing items, and keep everything stocked. The result? Confidence.

They had already been compliant but never confident. Now staff knew what they had, where it was, and that it would be ready if needed.

The lesson? Preparedness scales best when it's simple and standardized. With the right plan, first aid readiness becomes part of operations, not an ongoing headache.

AEDs left in trucks all winter is a problem we see far too often. ❄️

Most people don't realize the pads use water-based gel. When they freeze, they're done. And batteries? Repeated cold exposure shortens their life, even before the expiry date.

A company recently shared they were shocked to learn this. They assumed that because the AED hadn't been used, it was fine. Meanwhile it had spent weeks bouncing around in a truck, freezing overnight. That's not fine.

Maintaining an AED in Canada means thinking practically:
📍 Is it stored in a heated space?
📍 If it travels in a vehicle, who brings it indoors daily?
📍 What's the plan when fall temps drop suddenly?

Treat AEDs like what they are lifesaving devices.
Protect them. Inspect them. Monitor expiry dates. Assign responsibility. If they don't work when needed, the consequences are serious—physically, emotionally, and legally.

Don't let that happen. Get your plan right.

An AED won't help anyone if it doesn't work when it matters most. 🚨

Workplaces buy AEDs, then forget about them. But Canadian winters and dusty sites are just a few examples of why regular care matters to keep these devices ready to use.
The fix? Simple routine maintenance:

âś… Check status indicators regularly
âś… Know pad and battery expiry dates
âś… Don't leave AEDs in cold trucks overnight
âś… Keep inspection logs
âś… Assign ownership to someone on the team

Gel pads can freeze. Batteries die faster in extreme temps. A device that fails in the moment creates risk for employees and liability for the business. Neither is worth ignoring.

Most people shop for an AED the same way they shop for a TV 📺 What's the cheapest option?

But an AED isn't a onetime purchase. It's longterm safety equipment with a 7 to 8 year lifespan. Pads and batteries expire. Some models need replacements more often than others.

When someone says they chose an AED because it was "cheaper," we ask: cheaper today or over its lifecycle?
Once you factor in replacement costs and battery life, the math can flip completely. The "cheaper" device often costs MORE over its life. Beyond cost, think about:

→ Ease of maintenance
→ Alert clarity
→ Environment durability

An AED in a truck has very different needs than one in a climate controlled office. Our job isn't to sell the cheapest or most expensive AED. It's to help you make a decision you won't regret five years down the road. 🚨

Most first aid and CPR training programs are missing the mark. They're informative, but they don't prepare people for real life emergencies.

That's why we only offer onsite training. It's the only way we do it.

When people train in their actual environment (their office, gym, warehouse, or construction site), their brains connect those procedures to reality.

📍 Where is the AED really located?
📍 Where's the first aid kit?
📍 How far is the equipment from where people actually work?
📍 What obstacles could be in the way?

Details like these change everything and increase confidence. Trainees feel more equipped and are less likely to freeze.

Here's what people don't talk about enough: how it FEELS when it's real. In real emergency situations, heart rates spike, hands shake. The brain wants to freeze. This is the "Bystander Effect" kicking in, and it kicks in harder with more people around. We can't train people how to feel in that moment.

But we can reduce the chance of freezing by making training feel familiar and real. Office scenarios are different from gym scenarios. Gym scenarios are different from construction sites. Generic training treats them the same. But real life doesn't. That's why onsite training matters more than people think.

We Stay Ahead So You Don't Have To!

At First Aid Canada, we believe in being advisors, not just suppliers. That means staying informed about what's coming so you can focus on what matters most—keeping your people safe.

Here's how we do it:
→ We connect with the experts – Health and safety managers, regulators, trainers, and industry veterans help us understand what's changing before it becomes urgent.
→ We read the actual regulations – Not just the headlines. We dig into the details so we can explain what it really means for your workplace.
→ We reach out before you have to ask – Whether it's upcoming AED requirements, first aid kit changes, or seasonal reminders about equipment storage, we bring you the information early.

Our goal is simple: help you prepare with confidence, avoid last-minute surprises, and make sure your equipment works when you need it most.

That's what it means to truly put customers first. Let's keep your team protected together.

With Regulation 157/25 coming into effect, many construction projects in Ontario will need an AED on site. The good news is that the province has introduced a reimbursement program for qualifying projects.

Here’s what the program requires in plain language:

➡ AED purchases must be made between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2027
➡ Reimbursement applications can only be submitted after January 1, 2026
➡ All applications must be submitted no later than July 31, 2027
➡ The project must regularly employ 20+ workers and last 3+ months
➡ The AED must be Health Canada licensed, installed, and maintained properly
➡ A trained worker must be on site whenever work is underway
➡ Only one AED reimbursement is available per construction project

Many projects will qualify, but eligibility depends on documentation, timing, and compliance with the exact rules.

Our advice:

➡ Plan for readiness first
➡ Keep records of your purchases and installation details
➡ Make sure training, storage, and maintenance are documented
➡ Treat reimbursement as support, not as the entire plan

If you’re unsure whether your site qualifies, or want help choosing compliant equipment, our team is here to walk you through it and answer your questions.

New Details on AED Reimbursement for Ontario Construction Sites

We've received updated information about the reimbursement program for AEDs purchased under Ontario's new construction regulations—and it's helping clear up some important questions.

Quick Recap:
Starting January 1, 2026, construction sites with 20+ workers on projects lasting 3+ months must have an approved AED on-site under Regulation 157/25.

What You Need Beyond Just Buying a Device:
âś… Health Canada-licensed AED
âś… Required accessories (gloves, scissors, CPR mask)
âś… Proper storage and maintenance (especially important in Canadian winters!)
âś… Clear signage showing its location
âś… Trained worker present during all work hours

Understanding the Reimbursement Program (Bill 30):
The WSIB reimbursement program has specific rules worth knowing:

Timeline: Purchase between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2027, but applications only accepted after January 1, 2026 (deadline: July 31, 2027)

Eligibility: Only for qualifying construction projects meeting worker and duration requirements

Limits: One reimbursement per construction project

The Most Important Reminder:
Focus on readiness first, reimbursement second. Your safety plan should prioritize equipment that works in real Canadian conditions, clear procedures, and confident, trained workers—not just paperwork.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue sharing what I'm learning as these regulations roll out. Our goal is to help you make informed decisions with confidence.

Is your construction site ready for the new AED requirements?

Starting January 1, 2026, Ontario Regulation 157/25 means many construction sites will be legally required to have Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on site.
