🤕 Inflammation is usually thought of as bad, but it's actually a good thing when you get injured. Inflammation is how the body initiates the healing process. It occurs to protect the injury site, increase healthy blood flow, and send other types of healing cells to the area.

💊 A lot of the time, we rush to ice or take anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation. However, this could actually slow down and delay the healing process.

🩹 Inflammation should peak in about 3 days after an injury and then gradually decrease again. Prolonged or excessive inflammation is when it becomes a problem.

🏋‍♂️ Our bodies are really good at healing themselves, and inflammation is the first step, so don't always rush to stop it.

Do you have chronic or lingering pain, and you're unsure why?

To figure out why you might, we need to first understand the purpose of pain. Pain is our nervous system’s protection for our bodies, similar to a home alarm system. Usually, the alarm goes off, and then once you respond, the alarm slowly quiets back down, ready for the next potential danger. However, sometimes that alarm doesn’t go back down. It stays extra sensitive after you've responded or after the injury has healed, which you feel as lingering pain.

The bodies nervous system stays on high alert and warns you too often that something could be dangerous even when it might not be.

There are lots of things that can contribute to this happening, and if you don’t address what led to that alarm staying on high alert, you will likely continue to experience that pain. It's not always as simple as "removing the nail." Sometimes, our bodies stay on high alert, causing you pain long after you "stepped on the nail."

Stay tuned for upcoming videos where I’ll talk about how to figure out the potential causes of that alarm system staying on high alert, and then ways that could help calm that system down to manage your chronic pain.

Answer these 3 questions if your over 60 to start getting an idea of your risk for falling.

1. Do you feel unsteady when walking/standing?
2. Are you worried about falling?
3. Have you fallen in the last year?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you are likely at an increased risk for falls. Falls can be dangerous because if you are injured severely from one it could cause you to have a lot of difficulty getting around which then causes weakness. This could start a cycle of becoming weaker which then further increases your risk falling/injury and so on.

That is why it is crucial to intervene and break the cycle. A physical therapist can help you determine your risk and come up with exercise and other strategies to decrease it.

You can control how much sarcopenia will impact your quality of life!

💪The best way to prevent sarcopenia is strength and/or aerobic exercise.
💪That doesn't mean you must be an athlete. Start slow (1-2x/wk) with something you enjoy.
💪The best exercise is the one you enjoy and will stick to.

Was your Eclipse watching ruined by sudden dizziness?

💫 This condition usually reveals itself with a surprise vertigo attack after a change in head position, and looking straight up into the sky would be a great opportunity for it. For BPPV, seeing a vestibular physical therapist is a great place to start since you no longer need a referral for PT and can get in fairly quickly. We are knowledgeable in treating several issues that cause dizziness and thoroughly perform screening tests to make sure you are referred to other specialists if needed.
