Our GI nurses and associates are a highly specialized competent group. They run uniquely technical equipment and computers, ensuring safe patient care to our scheduled outpatient cases as well as our emergent in-patient population.

They provide 24/7 support to our patients who may present with acute life-threatening conditions.

They assist the physician in procuring biopsies (and safely getting them to the lab) to diagnose many different conditions associated with digestive diseases.

Their team of physicians also think they are wonderful and could not provide excellent care to the patient population without them!

During Women’s History Month, we’re proud to honor the women whose vision helped shape health care in our communities.

In the late 1800s, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth brought compassionate care to Colorado. Pioneering leaders like Mother Xavier Ross, Sr. Pancratia Bonfils, and Sr. Praxedes Carty helped establish hospitals that served growing communities and ensured people had access to care when they needed it most.

Decades later, as Denver’s health care needs continued to grow, sisters including Sr. Mary Pierre, Sr. Mary Asella, and Sr. Mary Keiran helped lead the planning for a new Saint Joseph Hospital campus in 1959. The hospital—known for its signature radial towers—opened in 1961 and continued the Sisters’ mission of caring for the community.

More than a century later, their legacy lives on across Intermountain Health hospitals along the Front Range. Every day, our caregivers carry forward the mission the Sisters set in motion: caring for people with compassion, dignity, and respect.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the generations of women whose courage and leadership helped build the foundation for the care we provide today. 💙

Lutheran Hospital has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by GO2 for Lung Cancer for our commitment to improving the detection and management of pulmonary nodules.

Each year, about 237,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer, and while it remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, survival rates continue to improve thanks to earlier detection and advances in treatment.

This designation highlights the work of our care teams to ensure patients with incidentally detected lung nodules receive timely follow-up, coordinated care, and clear communication. Through a structured program that tracks and manages nodules found during imaging, Lutheran Hospital is helping patients access the care they need sooner—when it can make the biggest difference.

“Lutheran Hospital is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality care,” said a hospital spokesperson. “We’re proud to be part of this national network working to improve lung cancer detection, treatment, and outcomes for our community.”

We’re honored to be part of the GO2 for Lung Cancer Centers of Excellence network, bringing national advancements in lung cancer care close to home for Colorado patients.

Lutheran Hospital continues to expand access to specialized cancer care with the successful launch of intravesical chemotherapy at the Lutheran Infusion Center.

After completing extensive training, the Medical Oncology Clinic team can now safely and effectively provide this treatment locally for patients who need it. The new service was implemented in just six weeks thanks to exceptional collaboration across teams and sites.

The effort brought together the new Lutheran Urology Clinic, including Dr. Shandra Wilson and Robin Veasman, along with Grace Sterns, an educator from Saint Joseph Hospital, whose expertise helped prepare staff for the launch. Led by Oncology Service Line Manager Stacey Jensen, the team worked together to turn an initial request into a fully operational service that expands care options for our community.

This milestone reflects the power of collaboration across oncology, urology, and education teams—and our shared commitment to improving access while delivering the highest quality care for patients.

She also talks about the rise in diagnoses among younger adults and why early detection can truly save lives.

Most importantly, the message is hopeful: when colon cancer is caught early, it’s highly treatable.

The L.O.V.E. (Living Our Values Everyday) Award recognizes caregivers who make a lasting difference for patients and families—and Monica Haptonstall at Lutheran Hospital exemplifies that every day.

Monica met Trudy and her family during one of the most difficult moments of their lives as they faced the uncertainty of a lung biopsy. From the start, Monica made herself fully present—answering every call, patiently explaining each step of the process, and ensuring the family never felt alone during an overwhelming time.

Her compassion quickly built deep trust. As Trudy was being put under for her biopsy, she softly said, “Monica’s in charge,” a reflection of the comfort and reassurance Monica had provided.

When the biopsy revealed terminal cancer and Trudy transitioned to hospice care, Monica’s support did not stop. She continued to show extraordinary kindness—comforting Trudy’s daughter, holding Trudy’s hand, and offering gentle reassurance during her final days.

Through her empathy, patience, and unwavering compassion, Monica brought peace to a family during the most heartbreaking chapter of their lives. Her care went far beyond clinical treatment and created memories her family will carry forever. đź’™
