In February 2025, Intermountain Health neurointerventional surgeon Donald Frei, MD, became the first in the world to use a newly developed guiding catheter to treat a hemorrhagic stroke — a life-threatening condition caused by bleeding in the brain.

This minimally invasive breakthrough, known as endovascular embolization, allows surgeons to navigate delicate brain arteries with precision, helping reduce trauma, recovery time, and risk.

Dr. Frei and his team’s innovation is already transforming stroke care — the first patient treated made a full recovery after just one night in the ICU.

🧠 As Dr. Frei says, “Time is brain.” With advanced tools and a dedicated team, Lutheran Hospital continues to lead the way in life-saving neurointerventional care across Colorado.

When a patient’s wife came to Lutheran looking for ways to support their young son after a devastating motorcycle accident, one of our caregivers realized something important — there weren’t enough resources to help children cope when their parent experiences medical trauma.

That realization inspired The LightBridge Project, an initiative designed to help families navigate difficult times and promote hope and resilience.

Each “Beacon Bag” includes:
✨ Age-appropriate books for children (ages 2–12)
✨ A comfort item like a teddy bear
✨ A feelings activity book with crayons or colored pencils
✨ A fidget toy
✨ A parent guidebook and teen support resource

Through generous community donations, more than 3,000 books and activities have already been collected to support kids and families facing these challenges. 💛

We’re so proud of the compassion and creativity driving this project — and the difference it’s making for our patients and their loved ones.

Pancreatic cancer can be difficult to detect early, which makes screening and regular check-ins with your primary care provider so important. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors and learn more about preventive care.

National Lung Cancer Screening Day is this Saturday, November 8!

Join us at Lutheran Hospital from 12:30–4 p.m. to learn more about lung health and the importance of early detection.

On October 24, Dakota Ridge High School and Golden Demons Football came together for the 11th Annual Think Pink football game in support of Lutheran’s oncology patients.

Before kickoff, players, cheerleaders, and coaches visited the Infusion Center to meet patients, hear their stories, and share gift bags filled with comfort items—all donated by students and parents. During halftime, breast cancer survivors were honored in a moving presentation.

For 11 years, Lutheran’s patients and staff have cherished this event, which reminds everyone that cancer is more than “pink ribbons”—it’s about compassion, connection, and community. 💗
