Wheeling Hospital

Wheeling Hospital A Tradition of Excellence. A Legacy of Caring. Wheeling Hospital, founded in 1850, has served patients longer than any other hospital in West Virginia.

Today, it is a 223-bed acute care facility with a medical staff of nearly 300 primary care and specialty physicians. Now known as WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, it provides a wide array of primary and tertiary care services. In addition to the hospital, the complex includes the Continuous Care Center and the Howard Long Wellness Center. Connected to the hospital are four medical office buildings. In addition, Tower 5 features a state-of-the-art Emergency/Trauma Center, Center for Pediatrics, Intensive Care Units, physician offices and private patient rooms. In downtown Wheeling, the Wheeling Clinic, a division of the hospital, houses additional physician offices and Visiting Nurses Services. Also downtown is the Urgent Care clinic in the Stone Center on Market Plaza. Along with a wide range of services, Wheeling Hospital also boasts a diverse medical staff which includes the specialties of: audiology, podiatry, urology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, cardiology, hematology, oncology, gynecology, pain management, nephrology, family medicine, and general primary care services. Health centers affiliated with Wheeling Hospital include: Bellaire, Colerain, Martins Ferry, Powhatan, Scio, Shadyside, and St. Clairsville. Physicians also see patients at Wellsburg Clinic, St. Clairsville Plaza and at East Cove Avenue in Elm Grove. The hospital’s newest addition is the Ambulatory Surgery Center in Bridgeport, OH. The ASC offers a more convenient experience for patients receiving outpatient procedures such as gastroenterology, plastic surgery, cataract surgery, podiatry, gynecologic surgery, orthopedic surgery and other general surgeries. Wheeling Hospital previously was owned by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. On March 31, 2021, it became a full member of the West Virginia University Health System (WVUHS) under a Letter of Intent between the Diocese and the West Virginia University Health System (WVUHS). The agreement ensures Wheeling Hospital will maintain its Catholic identity. As a full member of the health system, Wheeling Hospital is part of a broad, integrated network of doctors, hospitals, clinics, and specialized institutes across West Virginia, Southwestern Pennsylvania, Western Maryland, and Ohio. Today, the WVU Health System, which operates under the brand “WVU Medicine,” has more than 20,000 employees; 2,815 providers; 22 member, managed, and affiliate hospitals; and more than 2.5 million patient visits annually.

This week, some of our Wheeling Hospital team members attended the Rural Trauma Team Course, which brought together clinical teams from Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Wheeling Hospital, and Wetzel County Hospital, along with members of our community EMS. The course was led by expert trauma surgeons and anesthesiologists from Ruby Hospital, who shared valuable insights on delivering high-quality trauma care in rural settings. The day began with an engaging presentation focused on the unique challenges and best practices of rural trauma care. Attendees then participated in hands-on breakout sessions, gaining practical experience in airway management and chest tube insertions. We’re grateful for the collaboration and commitment to strengthening trauma care across our region.

In recognition of American Heart Month, WVU Medicine proudly sponsored the recent St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon, featuring Dr. Sunita Mahabir, Advanced Heart Failure physician with the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital.
Dr. Mahabir’s presentation centered on the importance of women’s cardiovascular health and the national Go Red for Women movement led by the American Heart Association. She emphasized that heart disease and stroke remain leading causes of death among women and discussed how symptoms can differ from those experienced by men, often contributing to delays in diagnosis and treatment. She also addressed ongoing disparities in care and encouraged attendees to prioritize prevention, recognize warning signs, and advocate for their health.
Following the presentation, Dr. Mahabir engaged attendees in a thoughtful question-and-answer session, providing practical guidance and addressing individual concerns. The event provided a meaningful opportunity to strengthen community partnerships while reinforcing WVU Medicine’s commitment to advancing heart health awareness throughout the region.

February is National Cancer Prevention Month: a powerful reminder that prevention and early detection can save lives.

Cancer doesn’t always come with warning signs, which is why staying proactive matters. Scheduling regular screenings, knowing your family history, making healthy lifestyle choices, and listening to your body are small steps that can make a life-changing difference.

Early detection increases treatment options and improves outcomes. This month, prioritize your health, encourage someone you love to get checked, and remember prevention isn’t just awareness — it’s action.

In conjunction with our NICU Open House and the unveiling of our beautiful, renovated space, we were honored to have Father Cyprian Osuegbu bless the unit and rooms in preparation for the patients and families who will come through our doors. It was a meaningful moment as we dedicated this space to healing, hope, and compassionate care.

We are also eager to share that we welcomed our very first little patients to the unit! We are incredibly grateful to have this new space and look forward to providing exceptional, specialized care to our tiniest patients and their families for years to come.
