Justice for Westchester County Social Services caseworker Maria Coto for her senseless murder while on the job. 😢

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Nov. 5, 2025:

Statement from CSEA on conviction in Maria Coto case

ALBANY – CSEA, the largest union representing Westchester County employees, today responded to the conviction of Hasseem Jenkins in the killing of CSEA member Maria Coto.

“Nothing will ever make up for the tragic loss of Maria Coto, but we are grateful her loved ones and co-workers are finally seeing justice served,” said CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan. "On behalf of CSEA, I would like to thank everyone involved in bringing justice for our union sister”.

Maria Coto died on June 19, 2024, from injuries sustained during a brutal attack by Jenkins on May 14, 2024, while she was working in the Peekskill community. Coto, a senior caseworker at the county Department of Social Services, was conducting a home visit as part of her duties when she was viciously assaulted.

“The fact that Maria was murdered when she was just trying to do her job once again highlights the important responsibility that counties have to ensure their workers make it home safe,” said Sullivan. "CSEA will continue to fight to ensure that workers are safer, including lobbying state and local governments. Maria Coto should be enjoying retirement right now. The only way we can truly honor her memory is by ensuring this never happens again.”

Coto was a member of CSEA Westchester County Unit 9200 and had been planning to retire. CSEA represents caseworkers in counties across New York State as part of our union’s membership of more than 250,000.

Maria Coto should be enjoying retirement right now.
"Nothing will ever make up for the tragic loss of Maria Coto, but we are grateful her loved ones and co-workers are finally seeing justice served," CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan said in a statement, in part, adding, "CSEA will continue to fight to ensure that workers are safer, including lobbying state and local governments. Maria Coto should be enjoying retirement right now. The only way we can truly honor her memory is by ensuring this never happens again."

Maria Coto was attempting a home visit at a Peekskill apartment building and mistakenly knocked on Haseem Jenkins' door.

CSEA demands justice for SUNY Upstate Medical University workers detained by ICE

SYRACUSE — CSEA is deeply disturbed by reports that two SUNY Upstate Medical University employees were detained by ICE earlier today while attending their immigration hearings in good faith to finalize their legal status. Before they could even enter the courtroom, both were taken into custody and now face possible deportation.
These are dedicated employees who have served New York State since, respectively, 2022 and 2024. One is a CSEA member, and the other is represented by UUP. They are valued members of the Upstate community. Detaining people who are following lawful processes is both unjust and inhumane and sends a message of intimidation to all immigrants trying to do things the right way.
“They are part of our Upstate family, they are our co-workers, our neighbors, and valued contributors to the hospital and community,” said CSEA President Mary E. Sullivan. “No one should be punished for following the law. Our union members and all hospital employees deserve dignity, respect and the chance to live and work without fear.”
CSEA stands in solidarity with these workers and calls for fair, humane, and transparent immigration practices that reflect the values of justice and compassion our nation claims to uphold.
