In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 14th, 2015, AAron Matej was killed in a hit-and-run accident in rural Sedgwick Co., KS. His case is still unsolved and is an open, active murder investigation being handled by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department - Case No. 15S006140. AAron had been out with friends the evening before, and was driving home at about 1:30am on Sunday morning. It's believed his truck became stuck in a muddy ditch when he was trying to either turn around or maneuver around a bridge that was closed for repairs just south of 13th St. N and 183rd St W. He tried unsuccessfully to get his truck unstuck and in the process overheated the vehicle. Neighbors heard him working on the truck and heard him calling his friend on his cell phone to come help him/pick him up. AAron walked north on 183rd in the direction his friend was going to be coming from. A short time later, his friend found AAron lying in the road right at the intersection of 13th St. N and 183rd St. AAron had been run over and the driver of the vehicle had left the scene. AAron's friend called 911, he was taken by ambulance to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, but due to massive head injuries and loss of blood, AAron did not make it and was pronounced dead a short time later. There are no suspects in the case and no arrests have been made. If you have any information that may help with the investigation, please contact Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111 - Case #1609. You can also submit a tip online at www.WichitaCrimeStoppers.com or from your mobile phone by texting TIP217 then your message to 274637 (crimes). AAron's obituary was published on June 18, 2015:

Check this out! AAron's case is now listed on a new webpage that the Sedgwick Co. Sheriff's office has linked to their website for Cold Case Unsolved Homicides. Wow!!

In recognition of Crime Victim Rights Week, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigations Division launched a Cold Case Homicide initiative last week. As part of the initiative, we created a page on our website that details unsolved homicides and provides information for the public to provide tips by email, phone or through Crime Stoppers.

As investigative leads dry up and a case turn cold, the partnership between law enforcement and the public is essential. If you or someone you know has information related to a cold case please reach out to law enforcement or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

Today our family had the honor of attending the funeral for Deputy Robert K Kunze III who was killed in the line of duty this past Sunday, September 16, 2018. Deputy Kunze was assigned to AAron’s Hit-and-Run investigation early on and was our primary contact with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department until the case was turned over to the Investigations Division. Deputy Kunze was a very hard working, honest and caring person. He was very open with us on what was going on with AAron’s investigation, provided regular, detailed updates to us, and would meet with our family often to go over our questions and concerns. Even after the investigation was turned over to a different department, we still kept in touch with him. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s department has lost a great person. Please continue to keep his coworkers, friends and family in your prayers.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Deputy Robert K. Kunze III was killed today in the line of duty. Deputy Kunze was 41 years old and a 12 year veteran of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. Prior to his employment with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Kunze was a 6 year veteran of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sunday, September 16, 2018, at approximately 1:18 pm, deputies were dispatched to the area of 53rd Street North and 295th Street West for a suspicious character. Deputy Kunze found a subject matching the description of the suspicious character call near the intersection of 295th Street West on 21st Street North, at approximately 1:42 pm.
At approximately 1:48 pm, Deputy Kunze activated the emergency button on his portable radio. Deputy Farias arrived on scene and notified dispatch a deputy was down. Deputy Kunze was transported to St. Francis by ambulance. Deputy Kunze succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at approximately 2:55 pm.
The suspect that shot Deputy Kunze was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect’s name is not being released at this time. We are still currently investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Please keep his family and our department in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Today our family attended the Annual Remembrance Reception put on by the Kansas Attorney General's Office and The Kansas Organization for Victim Assistance. It is a reception for families of crime victims - victims who had lost their lives at the hands of another. This is the second year our family has had the honor to attended this reception.

The holidays are an especially difficult time of the year for people who have lost loved ones. This reception is one way that our state, our law enforcement agencies and victim services organizations are trying to provide a way for victim's families to remember their loved ones in a special way, and to provide the families an opportunity to grieve with other people who understand exactly what they are going through. Everyone who attended the reception unfortunately share the same emotions and grief that comes with losing a loved one due to the actions of another person. Counselors, victim advocates, and even a therapy dog were on hand at the reception for anyone who needed their assistance.

After hearing remarks from Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett, Sedgwick County Undersheriff Richard Powell, Wichita Deputy Chief of Police Jose Salcido, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Corrections Joe Norwood and Director of Victim Services for the Office of the Attorney General Dorothy Stucky Halley, there was a slide show that included pictures of victims who have passed away. AAron was included in the slide show. It was very special, but very sad to watch. Some families had included messages about how much they missed their loved ones, and some had information about how they passed. There were mothers, fathers, teens, infants, elderly and even entire families being remembered in the slide show. There wasn't a dry eye in the room by the end of it.

There were two Christmas trees on display at the reception that were filled with ornaments left by families in remembrance of their loved one. Last year we left a stained glass angel ornament that our mom had made. We found the ornament again this year, and added to it a crocheted star, a note, and one of the cards we had made up a few months ago with information about AAron's unsolved case. It was really neat finding the ornament from last year and being able to add to it.

These two trees will be taken to two more of these remembrance receptions that are being held in Topeka and Kansas City this week. After that, they will be on display for the rest of the holiday season at the Kansas Attorney General's Office in Topeka. Last year a few of us were able to make it up there to Topeka to see the trees and to find AAron's ornament. As long as the weather cooperates, we plan on making the road trip up there again this year!

Today's reception was held at Newman University, which happens to be where our dad works as the chef for the company that provides Newman's food services. His boss was very generous and arranged for the donation of food and drinks at the reception, as well as arranging a coffee donation from Starbucks. He made the donation in our family's name. How awesome is that?!

After leaving the reception, we went out to AAron's spot to decorate it for Christmas, then brought some Christmas cookies and cheesecake to both the Sheriff's Office at the courthouse and to the Sheriff's Department's substation on S. Seneca. Not only do we want to let them know how much we appreciate their hard work, but we want to be sure that they remember AAron and know that our family is going to continue working to bring attention to AAron's unsolved case!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday's from our family to yours!
