"This cartoon was gifted to me by a client from years ago, who, along with their partner, had initiated couples therapy due to their desire for divorce. Following numerous sessions, their dedication and commitment to the therapeutic process & aligned goals ultimately led to reconciliation, resulting in a stronger marriage than ever before with them choosing each other daily. This cartoon was presented to me at the conclusion of our therapy sessions and consistently brings a smile to my face and is periodically shared on our page. While couples therapy may initially seem daunting, it can yield profoundly rewarding outcomes. If you or someone you know is in need of couples therapy, please do not hesitate to contact our office." Change is difficult, but the change of grief can feel unbearable...it is a rupture in your world that your brain has to recalibrate and learn to live and navigate. This poem is a great explanation. 🌹
_______________________
After you lose someone,
you’re not just grieving them—
you’re forced to unlearn everything you ever knew with them in it.

The routines.
The habits.
The quiet comforts you didn’t even realize you’d built around their existence.

You have to unlearn the instinct to reach for your phone—
to tell them the news,
to share something funny,
to hear the only voice that made things feel okay.

You have to unlearn looking for them in the room.
You have to unlearn the way your eyes search for their car in the driveway,
or your heart still waits for them to walk through the door.

You have to unlearn the sound of their footsteps,
the way the house felt when they were home.

You have to unlearn how the holidays used to feel—
like something to look forward to,
instead of something you brace yourself to get through.

You have to unlearn a version of yourself
that only existed when they were here.

And in the middle of all that unlearning,
you’re trying to learn how to keep going.
How to function.
How to smile.
How to show up for a life that no longer looks like yours.

This is what grief really does.
It rewrites the way you live.
Without permission.
Without warning.

And somehow,
you’re left to figure it out—
quietly, painfully,
piece by piece.

The Second Wave

It’s the one you never see coming.
The one that shows up years later,
long after people stop checking in.

You think you’ve done the work.
You’ve cried, survived, rebuilt.
You’ve convinced yourself you’re finding your footing again.
Then one random day, grief kicks the door back open.

It hits like it did in the beginning—
sharp, cruel, and familiar.
You don’t ease into it. You drown in it.
That same ache in your chest, that same lump in your throat.
You remember the exact sound of that day,
the way the air felt when your world split.
It all floods back like no time has passed at all.

And the people around you—they don’t see it.
They think you’ve moved on.
They think time has done its job.
But time doesn’t heal this kind of wound.
It just teaches you how to look functional while you bleed.

The second wave makes you realize how deep it still runs.
How love this real doesn’t expire just because life keeps going.
It reminds you that no matter how strong you’ve been,
grief still knows your name.

And when it hits, all you can do is stop fighting it.
Let it come.
Let it wreck you for a while.
Because it’s proof they still exist somewhere inside you.

You’ll stand up again—
you always do—
but for a moment,
you’re back there.
And that’s what the second wave really is—
not starting over,
just remembering how much it still hurts to love someone who’s gone.
