Last month the comadronas (midwives) of San Francisco La Unión met with Centro de Salud staff for their annual conference. Clinic workers and I presented new health information and protocols, in addition to dispensing new equipment (in their backpacks). In this picture the head nurse (to my left) and I stand with the comadronas outside of the Centro de Salud. - Amit

While I was at home for winter break, patients came to the town clinic, a few blocks down this street, asking about the weekly health clubs I help run. In a way, the centro de salud, or center of health, feels like the heart ♥️ of the town because so many people rely on it as their only form of healthcare. In fact, many generations have been born in that one building.

Excited to go back to work and return to the heart of Cajolá,
- Manjari ♥️

The quetzal is not only the symbol of Guatemalan currency, but also is considered among the most beautiful birds in the world. Additionally, both Mayans and Aztecs regarded the bird as sacred; royalty would often use their feathers as jewelry and during ceremonies. However, the quetzal has become threatened and increasingly harder to find. During a morning birding trip in the forest at the base of Volcan Atitlan, my family, who was visiting, and I spotted a group of these beautiful creatures. The following pictures were taken using a terrestrial telescope. - Amit @ Santiago Atitlán

Hi again! 👋 Members of my club for diabetes patients have advanced past learning about blood glucose to taking exercise and cooking classes! Here we are learning some basic stretches, using a balloon as a guide. Many patients are 50+ so we try to be mindful of age with the exercises we teach. Although a few balloon pops scared us, we laughed it off, learning a lot along the way. ☺️🎈😃 - Manjari

¡Hola! My name is Angelica Estevez. I am a global medical fellow from Los Angeles, CA. I graduated from CSU Chico with a bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology with a minor in Health and Welness. I am excited to be a part of the GPSA team as the first global medical fellow learning and exploring the field of public health in varying countries. During my service I will be working in Guatemala, Thailand, and Belize learning hands-on skills in a global healthcare setting. Guatemala is my first location in which I have been working in the town of Cajolá facilitating a club for diabetics/ those seeking a healthier lifestyle and a teens club at the local Centro de Salud (health clinic). In my time here I have been studying the Mayan language of Mam and exploring the beautiful land of Guatemala. I look forward to continuing my journey with GPSA and learning new cultures through my service. -Angelica

On the 1st of November, Guatemala celebrated “Día de Todos los Santos”, a day to honor and celebrate family members who have passed away. I spent this time with my host family doing the traditional activities of the holiday. This meant flying kites, eating “fiambre” (a traditional Mayan dish with veggies and cold cuts), attending a local horse race, spending time with family, and of course, going to the cemetery. - Amit @ San Francisco La Unión, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
