Achieving fitness goals may not always be easy, but it doesn’t have to be complicated either.

If you put in the work, you will see the results.

We tend to focus on all of our negatives, but sometimes we cannot change those “negatives.”

Negatives can be anything (e.g., perceived small or big arms, perceived small or big legs, etc.).

Just because you can’t change your genetics, doesn’t mean you can’t reach your goals. Embrace your positives, work on what you can, and be happy with what you do accomplish.

Yep! This may seem like an obvious question, with an obvious answer.

However, the reason why you feel less pain, or feel better in general, isn’t just from reduced strain on your body.

It’s also from reduced inflammation. Fat cells produce inflammatory markers in the body. If you lose fat, you also lose inflammation.

If you reduce inflammation, you feel good!

There’s always two options:
1) Look forward
2) Look backwards

It’s always about staying positive! When trying to get in shape or get healthier, it is rare that it happens in perfect fashion.

Just work at it each day and be positive that you’re headed in the right direction.

Sometimes, people in chronic pain (pain longer than 12 weeks) are hesitant to work out.

However, they don’t have to be. Exercise has been shown to reduce pain and other related symptoms. This has been shown to be effective in chronic headache, migraine, fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions.

While the specific types of exercises need more research, people in pain can work with a qualified professional to establish an appropriate program.

We all want to reach the goal(s) we set (which is great). Some we will reach right away and others will take some work.

Be aware, there are likely some failures along the way. Don’t think of them as failures, rather course corrections.

Redirect and try again.

Not exactly.

More sweating may not = more calories. Usually, the more you are sweating, the harder you are working and that can be true. That can mean that you are burning more calories, but only if you are actually working harder.

However, if you are sweating because you are wearing a sweatshirt, or working out in a hot room, you are likely not burning more calories. You are not going to burn significantly more calories compared to that workout in normal conditions and a t-shirt.

You may burn more calories in that one, hot workout, but not overtime. Your body will adapt and you’ll just be uncomfortable and sweating more than you should be.

The point is that pushing yourself to workout in a hot room and in sweatshirts is not likely burning more calories. It may, however, dehydrate you.

Work hard and don’t worry about how much you sweat!!

Do you have overhead shoulder pain?

How are your overhead mobility and stability? If they are limited, or you just want to prevent shoulder pain, take a look.

These can be done directly in front of you or with your arms slightly out to the side (scapular plane).

Either way, the goal is to push your wrists out (externally rotate) as you reach overhead and avoid arching your back.

Focus on what you can do today.

Of course, your past and future fitness plans matter, but not at the expense of today.

It is easy to skip today’s workout because you missed yesterday’s, or you think you’ll miss this weekend’s. We have all done it, or thought about it, but today’s workout is still worth it.

Your body responds to activity. Doing less of it is usually not the answer!

Build some muscle!

Each pound of muscle is estimated to burn 6-7 calories a day. This is compared to the 2-3 calories burned by fat. It isn’t a miracle, but every bit helps.

Building muscle also requires adequate dietary protein intake. Protein consumption also burns more calories than consumption of other macronutrients (carbs or fat).

Furthermore, to build muscle you are also working out more. The more intense your workout is, the more calories burned.

The point is, if you set out to build some muscle, and you work hard at it, your going to start down a path of burning calories.

Do you perform overhead exercises? How about overhead mobility exercises?

If you lift overhead, you should also practice moving overhead. This will help you maintain/achieve the right mobility and keep you shoulders healthy.

There are many things you can do, but one is a wall slide. I like to start out lying on the floor and progress to the wall.

This is sometimes tough in fitness, as we often focus on our problem areas.

While this is not to say that we shouldn’t work on our problem areas/weaknesses, don’t be too hard on yourself.

Give yourself credit and make a plan for the rest.
