Looking forward, there is no doubt that AI will continue to take centre stage in global healthcare initiatives

Although artificial intelligence (AI) has been influencing healthcare for years, 2020 firmly solidified its position as an indispensable part of the industry’s ongoing evolution.

However, one question still remains: how is the power of this technology helping to stop a global pandemic in its tracks and shield people from its devastating effects?

So far, its performance has been promising. Not only has AI enabled policymakers and frontline health workers to trace and limit the spread of Covid-19, but it has also accelerated the process of developing effective vaccines.

Looking forward, there is no doubt that AI will continue to take centre stage in global healthcare initiatives. Our reliance on artificial intelligence is reflected in the technology’s growing dominance in the financial landscape: the global AI in healthcare market size is projected to grow from $4.9bn in 2020 to reach a whopping $45.2bn by 2026.

In the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) has demonstrated its commitment to pushing the frontiers of AI by placing it at the heart of its innovation strategy. Indeed, the NHS Long Term Plan includes several commitments to help frontline staff leverage AI in their day-to-day roles.

With this in mind, here are three ways that the technology is set to transform healthcare over the next decade.

Nikolas Kairinos is the chief executive officer and founder of Soffos, the world’s first AI-powered KnowledgeBot, and is also the founder of Fountech.ai

Care Mentor AI introduces a new product to fight COVID-19

Care Mentor AI is ready to fight the main disease of 2020, Coronavirus. Our new product — «Mentor: CovidCT» — a service based on Artificial Intelligence for the detection of COVID-19 in CT studies.

«Mentor: CovidCT» is ready to launch to help doctors. Our product is designed to deal with a huge workload of doctors, taking on the solution of routine tasks. The system is based on a segmentation model of computer vision, which with high accuracy determines the percentage and degree of the lung damage by the main radiological features of COVID-19:
• Pulmonary Fields (IoU 0.95)
• Symptom frosted glass (IoU 0.81+)
• Consolidation (IoU 0.82)
• Pleural effusion (IoU 0.85)
• Cobblestone Syndrome (IoU 0.9)

This product is also invited to join the Moscow AI experiment and it is already undergoing technical and clinical trials.
Join webinar to discuss this groundbreaking Experiment here: mosmed.ai/?register=webinar.
Date: June 4, 2020. 18:00-19:30 GMT+1.

This experiment is a unique large-scale event that involves more than 200 radiologists and 100 medical imaging devices started this year in Moscow, Russia. This Experiment's primary goal is to study possibilities and determine the practical value of computer vision and AI-based software in the daily clinical practice of radiology departments.

The Experiment consists of 4 stages:
1. Preparation/application
2. Technical integration
3. Real-time analysis of radiological studies
4. Grant payment
Our first product «Chest X-ray Screening» is on the stage 3: Real-time analysis of radiological studies. We were one of the first who reached this stage. This product will pass FDA submission soon. Care Mentor AI at the forefront of the Experiment of the Moscow Ministry of Health. According to the results of the experiment, companies will have the opportunity to implement in the medical organizations of the city of Moscow.

Ilya Plisko, CEO of Care Mentor AI: “This Experiment is the first official platform where AI solutions for radiologists will be objectively evaluated on the market. We were one of the first who managed to collect the required set of documents and met high selection standards, which indicates a high degree of product readiness.”

Care Mentor AI: Progress in the Development of a Neural Network for COVID-19 Detection in CT Studies

Care Mentor AI creates a machine vision product based on neural networks that will help doctors recognize pathologies in CT studies. The program visualizes pathologically altered regions of the lungs on axial sections of a native CT scan. With high predictive accuracy, Care Mentor AI determines the radiological signs of coronavirus infection of the lungs (COVID-19). We obtained a basic model for segmentation of CT sections to identify pathological changes of coronavirus.

Computer vision model Care Mentor AI shows excellent results on pathologies such as infiltration, however, to obtain similar results on hydrothorax requires more training of the model. This is due to lack of data in the training dataset. To improve the results and speedy development of the neural network, we need a large amount of data: CT images of patients with coronavirus infection, as well as a description of the process and progress of treatment. It takes only about a month to finalize the algorithm, and we will be able to implement the product in medical institutions. It will facilitate the work of doctors and assist them in the rapid detection of cases with pathologies.

We ask you to assist us in obtaining studies of CT of the chest organs and overview radiographs with cases of confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19.

Why CT? This week, 45 CT centers based on clinics for early diagnosis of coronavirus were launched in Moscow. This is connected with the fact that, according to A. Rakova, the deputy mayor of Moscow for social development: “it is not always possible to make a diagnosis of coronavirus infection based on laboratory tests only. Therefore, we decided to create special centers where patients with suspected coronavirus will undergo additional CT and other studies to make an accurate diagnosis.”

Care Mentor AI develops Artificial Intelligence for rapid diagnosis of COVID-19

Care Mentor AI is developing an Artificial Intelligence system that will accelerate the analysis of chest radiographs and CT scans of patients that probably have viral pneumonia, which now, in the nowadays epidemiological situation, is most likely caused by coronavirus. At the moment, the accuracy of the neural network according to x-ray studies is 84% (on the part of internal data). We work with public data sets, on computing power, some of which are provided by our partner, NVIDIA. Data is marked by experienced radiologists in a specially developed interface.

Our team works in collaboration with leading Russian scientific and clinical teams: we worked with experts in the field of radiation diagnostics from St. Petersburg State University and the Mariinsky Hospital. We have created unique innovative computer vision systems based on artificial neural networks. These systems are used to detect lung pathologies according to x-ray, and will also be used to identify lung pathologies according to native chest CT. Our neural network models are equally precise as a qualified radiologists, but they exceed human capacity in productivity.

At the first, we will propose a system for the analysis of chest radiographs. In modern conditions of the widespread availability of X-ray equipment, this can dramatically change the situation with the detection of new cases of the disease in a short time.

Now more than ever, close-knit work is important to achieve positive results. Leave applications for cooperation and integration in the form of feedback at the link: clck.ru/MsM3d

Medical Director CMAI MD D. Blinov will demonstrate the effectiveness and clinical value of the Care Mentor AI system at the European Congress of Radiologists.

The work of our new mammography network was investigated by scientists of the P.A. Herzen, their conclusions about the high accuracy of detecting focal mammary gland formations by the Care Mentor AI network on radiographs will also be presented to the participants of the Congress.

We wanted to remind you, that evidences of high quality of first two Care Mentor AI artificial intelligence systems were examined in globally renowned platforms : analysis of lung radiographs and foot radiographs (flatfoot detection). Both systems are already integrated in a number of Russian medical institutions.

The annual European Congress of Radiologists is one of the largest and most innovative scientific meetings in Europe; it is hosted by the largest radiological community in the world - the European Society of Radiologists (ESR).

The Congress will be held from March 11 to March 15 in Vienna. We invite you to arrange a meeting at the event using the link in the first comment.

Care Mentor AI confirmed the effectiveness of the AI in analyzing foot radiographs in the scientific magazine «Imaging in Medicine» (No. 6, 2019).

X-ray examinations of the foot, in order to determine longitudinal flatfoot, are especially in demand in sports and military traumatology and orthopedics. Their analysis requires the painstaking work of a doctor on large flows of research. The Care Mentor AI artificial intelligence system copes with this task 6,000 times faster than experienced specialist, with high accuracy (detection quality 0.946).
