Supported by an education outreach initiative from the Southern Minnesota Regional Trauma Advisory Committee (SMRTAC), medical providers from Winona Health's Emergency Department and Winona Area Ambulance Service are offering FREE courses for non-medical groups such as law enforcement, teachers, churches, businesses, etc who may be called upon to respond to and deliver trauma care and bleeding control prior to emergency medical services (EMS) arrival. The course will...
• Explain the rationale for early use of a tourniquet for life-threatening extremity bleeding.
• Demonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.
• Describe the progressive strategy for controlling hemorrhage.

We had a great turn out of eager learners at our class last week!

Thanks to all who attended our Stop the Bleed workshop on Monday night. More community members now know how to respond to a bleeding emergency.

On average, rural residents wait twice as long for emergency medical services than urban residents. Stop the Bleed is a trauma training initiative that teaches laypeople how to pack wounds and apply tourniquets in order to improve survival rates until medical attention arrives.

We gave the course to the staff at St Mary's primary school. They already have a bleeding control kit in their AED box! Now all the Winona Area Catholic Schools staff has gone through this training!

We would love to share these skills with staff at all the local schools, and other businesses or groups that are interested! Let us know!

Thank you to Winona Health for hosting a Stop the Bleed class for the public! We had 12 eager members of the community come to learn. I forgot to get action photos of participants practicing with the tourniquets and packing wounds in the noodles this time, but the class was a success! And 2 lucky participants went home with a tourniquet kit!

We hope to hold another class in the fall, or sooner if there is demand. Message us to schedule a class for your group.

Big thank you to Mr. Bowlin at St. Stan's school for giving us the opportunity to teach a Stop the Bleed course! The teachers and staff got hands-on, trying tourniquets on each other and "packing wounds" in pool noodles.
