Although the benefits of touch is clear,
with the no-touch policies in schools and the isolating effects of cell phones and computers, people are touching each other less.

Skin-to-skin contact is important, not only for mental and emotional health but physical health, too. ...

Touch increases oxytocin,
(The natural antidepressant) increases serotonin
(The mood stabalizer)
Increases dopamine
(The feel- good hormone)

Massage is one way to get all of these especially with those who have depression or anxiety.

The Erector Spinae Muscles.
There are 3 on both sides of the spine.

When tight, they can limit movement of the spine. But it can also flip, if the spine is out of alignment it can affect the Erector Spinae Muscles.
This is one of many reasons that chiropractic and massage go hand in hand.
The Erectors connect to the neck and the pelvic bone, so
the same goes with the pelvic bone, if it's out of alignment it can also affect those muscles.

So schedule a massage if you have limited range of motion!

The Latissimus Dorsi, also known as "the Lats" is the largest muscle in the upper body, covering the lower half of the back. Its also known as the climbing muscle. It Helps to extend, move, and rotate the shoulder joint such as pull-ups, swimming and even breathing.

Injuries to this muscle are caused by activities that involve pulling the body upward and forward while the arms are over your head, overuse, or repetitive movements.

The Trapezius is divided into 3 large parts:
1. Descending
2. Ascending
3. Middle

It's a Superficial muscle that overlaps several muscles in the back.
The trapezius muscle is so named because of its near trapezoid (diamond) shape.

Muscle strain is common, especially for those who sit at desks for long periods. The main cause is incorrect posture.

When the problem is posture-related, knots, pains, and strains return over and over because of the repetitive posture for 8 hours...every day....5 days a week...20 times a month.
Best solution is to
1. Stretch the pectorals
2. Get up often
3. Get a massage

**The deltoid muscle
*Three main sets of fibers: anterior, medial and posterior.

It connects to your collarbone, shoulder blade and upper arm, which stabilizes the joint.

The deltoid lifts and rotates the arm, which the greatest range of motion in your body!

Each have different functions and therefore need to be stretched differently.

But this fact can cause many problems because they can be injured in different ways, and because they are linked ...what happens to one affects the other two.

Deltoid pain is usually caused by overusing your deltoid muscle without rest, proper warm-up or stretching. This increases your risk for a muscle strain or tear. Massage can help make sure that they are relaxed and less prone to injury!

The deltoid muscle was named after the Greek letter Delta due to the similar shape they both share.

Your pectorals:

1. Move your shoulders
2. Pulls the arms closer to the body
3. Assists with upper body stability
4. maintains correct posture
5. Assist in deep breathing.

If you have spent a decade working at a desk, your pec muscles become shorter as they get conditioned to poor posture.

*This causes rounding of the back. Which creates a domino effect..... Your head comes forward, it pulls your neck, shoulders and upper back.
Get pulled forward causing back pain.

The Pectoral muscles are a low level activity during many of our daily functions, such as ...

1. Driving your car
2. Typing on a computer
3. Sitting for long periods of time
These cause pectoral tightness and rounded shoulders if we are not consciously aware of our posture.
It can also limit the ability to breathe properly, too!

Prevention:

Regularly stretching and massage help release the pecs tremendously!

The muscles in the head & neck have important functions:
1. movement of the head & neck
2. chewing and swallowing
3. talking
4. facial expressions
5. movement of the eyes

Fun tip:
While most muscles connect to.... and move only bones, facial muscles mostly connect bones to skin.

Tension headaches can occur when muscles become tense or are being pulled from muscles in your back.
Tension can also come from
1. stress
2. anxiety
3. a lack of water

These can be helped with regular Massage!

Superficial muscles are close to the surface of the skin.
Deep Muscles are closer to bone and internal organs.

Swedish massage relaxes the superficial layers of muscle using a lighter pressure in the beginning.
Deep tissue targets the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues.

The part that people don't understand is you have to get through the superficial muscles first ....in order to get to the deeper muscles.
Similar to work out you have to do a warm-up before you can actually do your workout.

This is one reason why it takes several sessions to get rid of tension and knots. Make sure to schedule your monthly massage!

Our Story

Hello and Welcome to Mosaic Massage

I’m Laura Abernathy, Licensed Therapeutic Massage Therapist. When I was 14 I had a Brazilian exchange student who asked me to give her a massage and she said I was better than her own massage therapist back home. So, clearly I had a natural talent, but I also liked the way it made me feel. Helping others feel relaxed and taking away their aches and pains made me feel like I made a difference; whether big or small.

I continued to give massages to family and friends until 2006 when I graduated from Brown College in Mendota Heights.

I have been massaging full-time now for 14 years.
