Dave was hired as a deputy sheriff by Sheriff Jim Cameron in 1971, and was promoted to sergeant soon thereafter, and was assigned to administrative duties, including purchasing and procurement.

In 1978, Dave returned to civilian life where he remained at the helm of family owned and operated, Wallace Safe and Lock Co, until ill health prompted him to turn over the reins to other family members.
