October 10th is World Mental Health Day. And since October is also adopt-a-shelter-dog month, we would like to talk about how caring for a pet can help your mental wellbeing.
Not only do pets provide companionship, which reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness, but interacting with a pet releases the "feel-good" hormones oxytocin and serotonin, while lowering the stress hormone cortisol. Pets can also promote healthy routines and provide motivation for daily activities and exercise. They can serve as a catalyst for social interaction. Caring for a pet provides a sense of purpose, which can boost self-esteem.
At Ribley Family Chiropractic we love all animals, so if dogs are not your preference, get yourself a cat, or a bird, or a hamster—or maybe even a snake or an iguana! Whichever you choose, you will find that caring for a pet is the most-fun therapy there is! And when you are ready for a little TLC after all the attention you’ve been giving your pet, come in to Ribley for an adjustment. Call us today at 770-592-2505 to schedule your appointment!
Just remember, no matter how you achieve mental wellness—whether it’s through pet ownership, traditional therapy, or simply through connection with friends and family—self-care is extremely important, and there is never any shame in admitting you need a little help.
