We're so excited to welcome Jeffrey Gaines, MD, MHCM, FACEP, as Thundermist's new chief medical officer! He succeeds Dr. David Bourassa, who had served as chief medical officer since 1998 and who will continue to provide patient care as a pediatrician at our Woonsocket health center.

Before joining Thundermist, Dr. Gaines was the chief medical officer at Newport Hospital, where he worked for 16 years. He also served as the chair of the board of Coastal Medical and chair of the Brown University Health Wellness and Resiliency Council. In addition, he is an assistant professor of medical science at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University.

The appointment was made after a monthslong, comprehensive, national search. In his role, Dr. Gaines will lead a team of more than 100 providers across three Thundermist locations and oversee all aspects of clinical operations.

Dr. Gaines earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan, completed his residency Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, and received a Master of Health Care Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He, his wife, and two children live in Rhode Island.

We're sure you'll be hearing more about him in coming months. For now, we are making sure he gets time to visit all of our sites to meet with staff and patients alike and get up to speed on all things Thundermist. Welcome aboard, Dr. Gaines!๐Ÿ’™โš“

April is STI Awareness Month! And while preliminary data from 2024 suggest that the rates have slowed a bit, millions of people are diagnosed every year with sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

The good news is all the tools available to help prevent, and treat STIs--from condoms to DoxyPEP. If you are sexually active, getting regular screening is an excellent way to stay healthy.

Whether you are a current Thundermist patient or not, you can always access STI screening and treatment at our Convenient Care locations, which are open 365 days a year. Find Convenient Care hours and locations here: www.thundermisthealth.org/services/convenient-care/.

Last Wednesday, we were excited to once again host our Annual Meeting. It is an opportunity to bring together community partners, stakeholders, funders, staff, and board members to talk about what is happening at Thundermist and share news and accomplishments highlighted in our impact report.

This yearโ€™s meeting included award presentations to David Valois and Mary Ellen Caniglia, who recently ended their terms as Thundermist board members. Huge thanks to them both for all they've done. In addition, we presented the Francesco Cannistra, MD, Memorial Award to Jon Brien State Representative - District 49 (I, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), pictured here with board member Linda Cannistra. The award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed to improving healthcare in Rhode Island. Rep. Brien spearheaded a bill to protect the 340B discount medication program, building broad support in the Legislature for it.

We also presented the Community Partnership Award to the Jonnycake Center for Hope for their great work and for their partnership in many arenas--all with the goal to improve the quality of life for Rhode Islanders. CEO Kate Brewster (picutred here with Thundermist CEO Chuck Jones) accepted the award.

A huge thanks to Congressman Gabe Amo who delivered the keynote speech at the event and whose work every day helps improve access to healthcare in the state. (He is pictured here with Chuck Jones.)

Lastly, we were proud to unveil our 2025 impact report at the event, which highlights just some of the work the Thundermist team does on a daily basis. We're proud to make it available for all to read here: https://www.thundermisthealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Thundermist_ImpactReport2025-digital.pdf.

Thanks to all who attended and who support our work and the communities we serve. We look forward to seeing you again next year! ๐Ÿ’™

Telltale signs of spring at various Thundermist locations: the appearance of bunny (who may bear a striking resemblance to a couple of physicians) making rounds, visiting staff, and handing out treats. Happy spring, everyone! ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿฌ

401 Gives continues today! This year, your gift during this statewide two days of giving will support patients who need to see a doctor, dentist, or therapist but don't have insurance. Patients often avoid getting care because they are afraid of the bills that come along with it. But, with your contribution, patients know they can turn to Thundermist.

A $30 gift today will provide an Uber Health ride for a patient with transportation barriers so they can see a provider. And $50 helps pay for lab tests so a person can monitor and control their diabetes. No matter what level of contribution you make, it has a real impact on the communities we serve.

You can contribute through 6 p.m. today at www.401gives.org/organizations/thundermist.

Thank you in advanceโ€”and thank you to all of you who have already contributed!

Starting at 4:01 p.m. today, the first $20,000 in gifts across Rhode Island will be matched for 401 Gives. This means your gift at this time will double your impact and help twice as many Thundermist patients. Help us ensure all Rhode Islanders have access to high-quality medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare services, regardless of their ability to pay.

Make your gift starting at 4:01 p.m. at www.401gives.org/organizations/thundermist.

If youโ€™ve already donated, thank you for your generosity!
