I don’t believe you need to track your macros or calories to be able to nail your nutrition, following these general concepts can go a long way👇🏼

The problem with diet culture is it’s constantly trying to put a novel spin on nutrition, usually with a focus of losing weight.

While it might seem easier to follow some specific rules on what to eat and what not to eat, in reality it’s overcomplicating things for you.

One end of the spectrum is saying low-fat is better for you while the other is saying low-carb is better for you.

This diet says remove anything our ancestors didn’t eat, even though our ancestors didn’t live nearly as long as we do now.

That diet says eat these precise products that were manufactured by food scientists to slim your waist.

What if - and hear me out - we just went back to the basics?

Eat a balance of a variety of whole, real foods while moderating indulgences.

✔️No restriction is needed.
✔️You don’t need an abundance of willpower to stick to it.
✔️And when you get it right, you feel really damn good.

Okay, I know what you're thinking...

💭I don’t like eating the same food day after day
💭I don’t want to spend 3 hours of my Sunday in the kitchen

The thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way.

I help my clients develop a process for meal planning + prepping that is unique to them and their needs.

👉🏼If you need food variety, you can cook more frequently throughout the week or cook main ingredients and transform them into different meals each day.

👉🏼If you don’t have a lot of time, you can rely on methods like crockpot dump meals, sheet pan vegetables, and simple meals.

👉🏼If you don’t like going to the grocery store, you can get your groceries delivered.

👉🏼If you don’t like cooking, you can use a meal kit or meal prep company.

Regardless, you have to stop thinking that you can nourish your body while winging it every week.

Contrary to popular belief, you are not the Energizer Bunny and you cannot expect to just keep going and going 🐰

Training junkies will want you to think results come from training harder, but in actuality the BEST results come from training SMARTER.

I’m assuming you’d like to still be training well into your later years (without waking up feeling like you got hit by a bus each morning), so you need to appreciate the value of REST.

What you do to recover is just as important as what you do when you train.
👉🏼Resting between sets
👉🏼Taking rest days between training sessions
👉🏼Taking deloads periodically and strategically

Trust me when I say, how you manage your rest as a part of your training will make or break your body and progress.

Here’s photo proof that I am guilty as charged for going against my own advice… but hear me out on this one.

In my coaching I teach mindful eating. This means to eat slowly without distractions so you can pay attention to and connect better with the food you eat.

Without distractions means stop eating in front of the TV or while scrolling on your phone.

Yet, here I am eating dinner while watching TV.

This is not my norm, usually TV dinners are rare and special. But because I’ve been practicing mindful eating for years, I can eat mindfully while watching TV.

I’m not trying to make a new set of rules that my clients need to abide by perfectly. After all, many of them are coming to me to escape diet rules.

But I do want them to develop the ability to eat mindfully and to do so that requires eliminating distractions as they learn and build on this skill.

Then overtime as they become more confident and have better eating habits, they can watch TV on the occasion and eat without overeating or eating super quickly.

The point of finding food freedom is to feel truly free with your eating - and sometimes that means bending the rules and living a little 😉

Old me said, “I can’t afford it.” The truth was I didn’t care enough to budget and prioritize it.

Back in my mid-20s, I worked for Reebok HQ. This meant my closet was FILLED with all the latest shoes and workout apparel.

Just because I had an awesome employee discount didn’t mean I wasn’t spending my own hard earned cash on these items. It just meant I bought more of it.

I was coloring my hair every 4 months.
I was hitting the bars and going out 3+ days a week.
I was also getting 3 new tattoos a year.

Meanwhile, when it came to my health I said, “I can’t afford it.”

Fast forward to now...
I admittedly haven’t bought a new pair of leggings or athletic shoes in over a year.
I get my hair done maybe once every six months and I keep it simple.
I’ve cut back on my social life expenses and partying.
My ink collection has slowed way down.

Instead, my budget has gone towards investing in my coach who for the past year has helped me rehab my chronic back pain as well as monthly massage therapy. The back pain I allowed myself to live with for years because “I couldn’t afford it.” 16 months into my rehab journey I’m nearly pain free and rebuilding my strength.

The hard truth I’ve had to choke down is that I probably could have afforded it, but I didn’t prioritize it. I could have made sacrifices, but I found that investing in coaching didn’t provide the same instant gratification as a night out or a new hair color.

I was always trying to figure out nutrition and fitness the free way. As a result I was trapped in a cycle of dieting and overexercising for over 10 years. This lead me to be burnt out and in pain, which I've now had to deal with later in life.

Imagine if I had invested in myself in 2015, where would I be today?

Believe it or not you have the choice - the choice to continue to do it the free way or the choice to make the really hard sacrifices and invest in yourself and your future health.
