Since becoming a mom I've mostly been in a "just survive" mode if I'm being honest. Life has been good, I love my son, but also the bare minimum is all I've got a lot of days. Lately I have been reading and listening to content that has reminded me about the importance of calming down my body and mind. You can look at this from a spiritual, physical, emotional or mental health perspective. Any of these avenues will point you to similar practices. We need time to be quiet, to be still, to just breathe, to pray, to lie down, to do restorative movement not just work, to listen to God, to process. It can be so hard to carve out any sort of time like this as a mom but I've been trying to do a very short yoga practice after he is in bed. Most days it's just a few poses and not rigorous at all. Sometimes it's just lying on the floor for 10 minutes (with my eyes closed so I don't see the things that need to be done). I was wondering if anyone would be interested in joining this kind of thing on zoom once or twice a week? It would never be more than 20 minutes and I promise it won't be physically hard, mostly stretching. I could also try the Facebook Livestream thing so you can rewatch on your own time. Interested?

πŸπŸ‚Coming into the season of Fall can bring a lot of feelings of change, exhilarating but sometimes unsettling. Join me tonight for a practice that will help restore balance and find your center. πŸπŸ‚

We will talk about the the Vata Dosha, which according to yoga teaching represent Air, Lightness, and Chaos. Sounds like Fall to me!

I teach at High Steppe Monday nights at 6 pm :)

These are my notes for class tonight. When I first started teaching I often made elaborate class plans complete with full hour playlists, only to have my entire plan go out the window as soon as my students walked in the door. I often had great aspirations but didn't have the skills to execute my plan well. Sometimes someone would come with a special request or with a physical condition that didn't allow for me to follow my plan, and sometimes I would just plain drop it all in the middle of class and get off track. I'm not a guru, not even all that wise, just a yoga teacher offering what I can.

Although I still cringe sometimes at the memory of those early classes, they are a part of my journey as a teacher. The good news is that we can grow! I have experienced so much growth as a teacher thanks to my first instructors at and my continued education . I also have to thank in Claremont for getting me through my college years.

I do spend time preparing for every class I offer. Teaching well is a part of my yoga practice, whether I have 1 student or 20, you deserve to be taught well. πŸ’•πŸ•‰οΈπŸ™

New mask policy as of August 23, 2021 at High Steppe: Masks are not required for Yoga or "while engaged in strenuous activity" in the fitness area BUT we all need to wear them as we come in the gym and until we are set up on the mat. Regardless of your opinions on masks and their effectiveness please respect the space we are in. High Steppe Climbing Gym has been very supportive of the growing yoga program and I'm super grateful to them!! Please and thank you πŸ™ to all my High Steppe students.

If you are uncomfortable attending a yoga class with unmasked folks, I have good news: I'll be offering zoom-based and recorded classes within the next few weeks. That info will be announced on my Facebook and IG pages 😁

This week I'm away from the studio visiting the beach πŸ–οΈπŸšπŸŒŠ. I'll miss all my students but will be back next week! As a fairly high strung person it takes a lot of practice to relax and stay still. Over time I've developed a few rules for vacation that help me avoid busy work and make the most of my time off.

1. Exercise Daily - sometimes if I'm super exhausted I will let this one slide but usually some gentle, intentional movement during the day is so helpful for my physical and mental body even if it's only 10 minutes. Other days I find it refreshing to work out even longer and harder than I would at home.
2. Don't worry too much about food - I eat what is available and easy without worrying about being "healthy" or "unhealthy", it's a vacation after all.
3. Take extra time for my personal care - this can look like getting waxing or doing it myself, straightening or curling my hair (which I NEVER do at home), getting a massage, trying some random new spa treatment that looks interesting, etc.
4. Read and Write - If there's anything that helps me relax it is these two activities. I love the calm state of mind from getting immersed in a book and the new connections made by learning. I'll also spend time journaling to collect my thoughts or process these same thoughts in letters to friends.

That's my list of vacation rules! What do you think? How do you make the most of vacation? Leave your thoughts in a comment πŸ‘‡πŸ˜Œ

Every day before teaching class I do my own workout, and it's not always yoga! Yoga and weights go well together, and will help improve your overall fitness. As someone who has had injuries because of overstretching in yoga i know the importance of strength and stability in addition into stretching. Can you see how single leg deadlift a could help stabilize a pose like half moon or warrior three?

I'd love to eventually offer classes or private training on whole-health fitness combining yoga, mindset and traditional gym training. Maybe I'll get there next year, but if that's something you are interested in send me a DM. :)

I'm happy to donate $50 to in Yakima which came from the generous donations at . Yoga is not just about doing fancy poses, and I'd argue that the heart of yoga is non-physical but an internal, spiritual journey. Yoga teaches us to be aware and awake not only in our own lives, but also for what's happening in our community. In Yakima we make a difference together.

The next date for Yoga In the Park will be August 21 at 9:00 am. Note the time change. We will start at 9 instead of 9:30 next time!!

Meanwhile classes are continuing at High Steppe Monday and Wednesday at 6.
